I have just bought a car from the other side of the country

He had a new ( probably recon ) compressor fitted to get the air con working

but 400 miles later its jammed solid and has snapped the belt so i cant go anywhere now wit the alternator not going !!!!

He has sent a replacement pump but im struggling to find anyone brave enough to fit it and re gas it as they think it might be a fault somewhere else causing it and dont want the responsability of the pump they fit going again and the fitting being blamed for it !

Could it be a problem else where or was it just bad luck with the last pump ?

Please help

Thanks

they probably just fitted it, gassed up and away. There was probably little or no lubricant in the system.

When you change any a/c item such as a compressor, you must also change the dryer and make sure all items are filled with the correct volume of lubricant (as on the TIS)

It's a little unfair your crtique of modern machinery.

Think back to constantly adjust idle mixture to get good idle, adjust valve clearnces. Moving on to ignition adjusting timing, replacing points, rotor arm and distributor cap.... the list goes on. Then ytou could consider the fuel consumption the Cortina simply wouldn't hack it. If the Cortina had parts fitted incorrectly or indeed faulty then it too would give up the ghost, remember the camshaft? very prone to failure on the Pinto engined Cortina's.

Your aircon compressor was either faulty or installed incorrectly, it's irrelevant how pissed off the dealer is, it will just have to be done again at his expense. Make sure (preferably witness) that the system is flushed to remove any swarf, debris etc. I personally would write to the dealer rejecting the vehicle and give them 7 days to rectify the faults. They should loan you a vehicle, make good their shoddy work and retun it to you.

I guess memories are tinted by rose coloured glasses

But at least a set if spanners and a haynes manual was sufficient to fix it

these days with torx head fittings and the like you have to have a sizable tool kit

just to tackle a job & if you can get into anything you need a degree in engineering to understand how it works lol

at least the cortinas were unreliable enough that we all became experts at seting the timing !

Remeber all those times when the hex heads became rounded and your skin became punctured?...... doesn't happen so much with torx

It's true .... we do only remeber the good times

I have had a new compressor fited today and the dealer has paid for it to be done locally :D

The previous pump they had fitted has never seen any oil and the mechanic is still arguing that it shouldnt have needed any

Still there problem not mine !

Hopefully thats an end to my air con wow's but after reading the board here i wont be betting on it :o

if it goes again i think i will just bypass the pump with a new belt and open the window when it gets hot

Thanks for the help guys
