Guest coliff Posted May 9, 2005 Report Posted May 9, 2005 Hi, My 1997 GLX Gal only has a driver airbag. I saw an airbag on eBay that fits into the top glovebox. Just wondered in this is a DIY job or overpriced dealer fit. I imagine its dealer install as there must be some form of mpact sensor to be fitted. Just curious how straightforward the fit would be as my missus would be happier with an airbag in front of her !! Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 9, 2005 Report Posted May 9, 2005 Just get her to hold one of those exercise balls in her lap when she sits in the front passenger seat. The proper passenger airbag needs to be correctly fitted so that the crash sensor and safing senosr (plus any others that are fitted) give the correct signals at the correct time to fire the bag. It is not a simple retro-fit job. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted May 9, 2005 Report Posted May 9, 2005 To get it to fit and work correctly you would also need the mounting bracket that re enforces the dash in order to take the impact of the airbag going off, the correct loom and the correct ECU for two airbags, unless you wire it up for manual operation and give the passenger the trigger switch to operate it :D could be fun with a nervous passenger  Quote
mobile armchair Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005  Manually operated airbags!! Oooeerr! I agree the retro-fit idea doesn't seem a good idea either ... too many inter-dependent elements like the re-inforced dash and supply to sensors. Quote
greg_68 Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 Am i right in believing there are no restrictions on buying and fitting airbags? Given the safety implications (being an explosive device with pyrotechnics) I find it incredible that it is not illegal to both sell these and have the ability to fit them without any experience. They are treated with kid gloves when fitting them at our place. What happens if the car you bought has had one previously fitted/replaced by an amateur? you ain't going to know it wasn't fitted properly until it's too late. Quote

katman Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 What happens if the car you bought has had one previously fitted/replaced by an amateur? you ain't going to know it wasn't fitted properly until it's too late.Worst case, you wont know at all :D Quote
dave_m Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 a lot of the airbags available on ebay and the like are probably stolen, it is quite common these days to wake up in the morning and find that some scumbag has stolen the airbag from your motor, I personally would not buy any item like that off ebay, i mean you wouldn't know what has happened to it during transit etc or where it originates from!
