Rallim Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Having read several threads on adding fog lamps, I was of the understanding that the wiring loom was already present and all that was required was the lamps, surrounds and switch with front fog lamp support (+ possibly a relay). So I merrily purchased lamps and a switch (switch was Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 I'd be tempted to phone your VW dealer and say that you have bought all the parts, where are the connectors hidden? Quote
Rallim Posted May 5, 2005 Author Report Posted May 5, 2005 Yes I think I will talk to them as I have to go to the dealers to pick up the surrounds, (2nd attempt, the first time they sent the ones I've already got without the fog lamp cut out). How helpful they will be is a different matter, the parts guy always seems extremely cheesed off in a "why do you bother me with such trivialities as your 4 year old car..." attitude. He seemed even more cheesed off when I told him they were the wrong grilles! Nothing better than a VW garage to make you feel special :P (well my local one at any rate). Thanks, Gordon. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Have you tried fitting the switch yet? and seeing if the indicator for the front fog illuminates? you may find that you need the relay! look in the fuse panel and see if it's already there or not? on my MK1 all I had to do was pop in the switch, mount the lamps and switch on :P the relay and the cableing was already in place :P you may find that the cables are tucked up behind the grill/bumper, plugged into a blanking plug to stop the cables rattleing around! Rallim Posted May 7, 2005 Author Report Posted May 7, 2005 Yes I have fitted the switch and the front fog symbol illuminates when I pull it out one notch. I can't hear any relay clicks, but neither can I hear one for the rear fog when I turn that on. I will check for the relay, but I am unsure where they are situated. I can see the fuse board, under the steering wheel, and the fuse board looks like it should move / slide out the way, are the relays behine the fuses or am I looking in the wrong place! Thanks. Gordon. Quote
Rallim Posted May 9, 2005 Author Report Posted May 9, 2005 I picked up the fog surrounds today and asked about the cables. The parts guy asked a technician who immediately replied that they are not present... :) Well I'm not totally convinced, but I will do what has been suggested in other threads and remove the bumper to fit the lamps and have a good nose. If in the end I have to wire them manually so be it. Thanks for the advice, I will keep you posted as to my discoveries! :) Gordon. Quote
Rallim Posted July 14, 2005 Author Report Posted July 14, 2005 I've just realised that I never did post back as to how I got on with this job. In the end the VW technician was correct, the wiring loom did not have the wires for the fog lamps, also borne out by the fact that there are no wires to the light switch for the fog lamps. So not to be beaten I did wire them manually. I struggled to find a way into the passenger compartment from the engine bay, I was unable to find the grommets that had been stipulated to be present in other posts so in the end I gained entry by following the bonnet release cable! Having checked the TIS wiring diagrams it was clear that the fog lamps are driven directly from the main light switch (no relays - worrying but when you look at the size of the switch it would seem to be OK!). So I now have working fog lamps... just need some fog.... Thanks to those that offered advice. :) Gordon Quote
