soptom Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Morning all, my 2.0 manual from 1997 is showing starting problems, sometimes (two or three times a day, hot or cold) it just lets out a screech and doesn't kick the motor over when turning the key, usually on the second or third try it then starts fine. It's had a new battery and I opened up relay 30 and that looks fine. Is it likely to be a bad starter motor? It never clicks indicating the solenoid, just screeches as though its not meshing with the engine. Could I thank anyone who offers advice in advance as you've already helped with the various problems you find after buying a car, the most helpful being fumes being drawn through the vents and after searching for it on here it was indeed a loose pipe on the charcoal canister, something I would never have known about, so cheers. Ian. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 It never clicks indicating the solenoid, just screeches as though its not meshing with the engine. Starter solenoid not engaging drive with the toothed ring on the flywheel. Not sure if you can get the bits you needseparately or if you will ned a complete new motor. May be worth trying to find an auto electrician (although this may work out more expensive, will need to be checked). Quote
soptom Posted May 4, 2005 Author Report Posted May 4, 2005 Does it indicate that a new starter motor would fix it or would you hazard a guess that the flywheel toothed ring is kaput too? Quote
Topbloke Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 sounds like the starter not engaging correctly could just be dirt/dust on the shaft ,you would need to remove to check if it looks clean and the bearing in the end of the starter looks okay then i would say that a new starter is required <_<  Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 ... or would you hazard a guess that the flywheel toothed ring is kaput too? On the occasions when it does engage normally, if you get a continuous whining sound, then the ring gear is almost certainly undamaged - the engine needs to turn over more than one revolution to "catch" so any missing or damaged teeth will cause the starter to make "odd" noises as it passes the damaged area. soptom Posted May 4, 2005 Author Report Posted May 4, 2005 Okay thanks, I'm hoping that it's just the starter motor itself then. Quote
