gazza007 Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 Can anybody advise which oil to purchase for a 115 PD Diesel without having to pay dealer prices( Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 Yes - best to use fully synthetic. Try Mobil 1, or I think Castrol do a "magnatec" for turbodiesels as an alternative.Don't know if Halfords still do their own-brand fully synthetic which I have used on previous (petrol) engined cars. gazza007 Posted June 18, 2003 Author Report Posted June 18, 2003 I don't think the Mobil 1 is 5W-50, I'm sure its 0W-50.I'll have a scoot round some shops. Thanks Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 0W-50 is better than 5W50 (more viscous at lower temperatures). Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 So my 6000 mile 130 TDi needed about 0.4L of oil. In the manual (printed 09/2002) it states use VW 505.01. Under the bonnet it states use VW 506.01. Off to the dealer. They haven't any 506.01, never sell it - never use it. What a sodding farce. Contacted Seat UK - no response yet. I topped up with Castrol SLX2 Longlife, which is friggin' dear and also the purest green. And VW 506.01. And on the pack it states - "not to be used where VW 505.01 is required" Shoot me now..... Guest Carl Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 We have a 130 TDI, when I enquired about topping up the oil at the local Ford main dealer with 506.01 they said that they have never heard of it! So, where do we go from here. Carl Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted June 19, 2003 Report Posted June 19, 2003 I'm using the Castrol 506.01 at the moment, as previous note. As far as the 10,000 mile service is concerned, that's a matter I need to resolve before the dealer uses the "wrong" oil. Or not. The dealer has been back on to say the manual is correct and that the sticker under the bonnet is a general one for vehicles with variable service intervals.. Oh yeh? Quote
Guest alan Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 emailed and phoned several oil companies regarding suitable oils for seat alhambra 130tdi (pd) I am ex motor trade and know some of the twaddle told to customers just to sell a product.....large oil companies should be more proffessional in their approach because they don't know who they are talking to on the phone. only one replied making sense.... millers oils who produce an oil specifically for the pd tdi's ...approved by VW and one would assume ford and seat. called XFE PD Quote
Guest nuts Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 just been to my loca trade couter ,and their system has come up with Dx3 H/Duty 15w/40 Quote
mumof4 Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 since nuts has resurrected a thread that is 4 yrs old..can i say that the millers oil XFE PD 5w 40...is now 31 quid for 5 litres.!!..(its what i used when i did the oil change) nuts..for the pd engine you need 5w 40 hun...to vw 505 01 spec. tim-spam Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 Just to clarify things: 506.01 is the oil to use on a PD engine with variable service intervals. As far as I am aware, neither the Seat Alhambra nor the Ford Galaxy were ever offered with the variable service interval - it appears to be a 'VW only' offering (although I am not 100% sure about this). PD engined cars with fixed service intervals (ie: oil change every 10,000 miles) should use oil to 505.01. However, sometimes, cars with fixed service intervals have a sticker on the bonnet slam panel showing 506.01 - this is not correct, unless the car is on variable service intervals. Neither Mobil 1 nor Castrol Magnatec meet either of these requirements and should not be used in PD engines. I use the 'fully synthetic' Comma PD engine oil - Quote
zeplin43 Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 The oil to be used on a tdi pd engine has to have the 505.01 vw specs for the 20 000 KLMS oil change.506.01 is the long life oil (30 000 klms) interval oil change. These two oils meet the vw specs they have various aditives which lubricate the engine. These aditives remain a big big secret and make us use oil that is realy expensive, the same thing aplies to the auto tranny atf.Look at this thread on freds tdi forumhttp://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=129311 Quote
tim-spam Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 The oil to be used on a tdi pd engine has to have the 505.01 vw specs for the 20 000 KLMS oil change.Should read 15000km. 506.01 is for the variable service regime, which can be up to 30000km (20000 miles) dependant upon the type of driving done (number of cold starts, etc.) - it can be as low as 15000km. jkspoff Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 (edited) OK, call me sad, but here goes...........I do my own oil servcing, but just out of interest I went on the manufacturers web site and selected 8 main localish dealerships and rang each one up asking for their service department. I told them I had a 2001 115 PD tdi Ford Galaxy, asked how much a service was and whether I needed specific oil for this type of engine. Out of the eight main dealers six of them replied that the oil was standard and that it was kept in large drums and was general diesel oil used in most of their servicing, when I questioned them about 505.01 spec oil, four of the garages had never heard of it, two said 'oh yes', you can put that in but we rarely ever use it unless the customer requests it and we'll have to order it in, and the final two garages didn't even offer it as an option. Try it in your area if you're as bored as me on a day off ! So I would never trust them to do such a simple task correctly anyway. Edited March 4, 2007 by jkspoff Quote
tim-spam Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 This may be what comes of having what is basically a VW maintained by Ford dealers... However, given that it seems that many Galaxies with PD engines have been running around with the wrong oil, has anyone actually experienced or heard of any cam failures on these engines. I certainly haven't. Quote
