most of the time speedo will be fine , then it will stop working or read 120mph (in a 30 zone ;) ) and other times it will be going up and down

is this a common fault and if it is whats the cause/cure ???

sounds like a loose,or damaged speedo cable.I had this on an escort once, and the cable was to blame.

hi

so its just a normal speedo cable on the sharan , not electronic speedo ???

No cable its an electronic speedo, there is a mechanical sender on the gearbox that is connected to an electronic sensor, it could be a duff sensor on the gearbox, a bad connector or wireing to the sensor, or your clocks are dieing!

I'd take it to an independant VW specialist rather than a VW Main Stealer as it's 7 years old if I was you, unless you've got money to burn!
