Guest HOT UNDER THE COLLAE Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 I am after some advice if anyone would kindly oblige.About 2 months ago my car ( 1996 2.8 V6 Galaxy) overheated. I tool it in and was told that the thermostat needed replacing. I had that done and a week later a belt tensioner on the alternator broke so had to get that repaired (it doesn't rain it pours!!!) Now the car seems to be running very hot especially at low speed. If I am travelling at higher speeds the needle goes down to about the middle of the gauge, but as soon as I slow down it goes right up to just below the red. The fan does come on and cools it down slightly. There is also a smell of hot water(if you know what I am talking about). The car does not seem to be using water. The head was also tested when it first overheated and was fine. Has anyone got any ideas as to what might be going wrong? Quote
Guest MATT Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 Is it possible that the water pump (that pumps the coolant around the engine) is not working? so at high speeds, the air coming through cools the engine, but at slow speeds, nothing. matt Quote

They mentioned sensors and the such. My concern is that they have a reputation of being rip offs and will charge me just to open the bonnet!!!!! Quote
dipsomaniac Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 My V6 is probably not the best example at the moment as I am having my fair share of problems, but my temperature gauge is normal at speed but in traffic creeps up near to the red, the fan then comes on and the gauge comes back to normal again. I have never thought it was a problem. Quote
