1999. 1.9tdi

I have had tail light fault indicators on for aprox 1 week, even though the rear lights were working ok, followed by glow plug symbol flashing from today, I have checked the threads here, and checked the brake lights, which are not working, am ok with this so far, as I will replace the brake pedal servo.

The main problem is power loss at about 2,500 revs in 3rd or 4th gear. I changed the MAF sensor over last week from our good friends GSF (

I cant see why you want to replace the brake servo? the brakes are still working ok? but the brake lights are not? my logic says to change the brake light switch first before I go to the trouble and expense of replaceing the servo!

the link to loss of power, MAF failure and lack of brake lights is a known thing! why these items are linked is a strange one though <_< try the brake light switch first and then see how you get on?

if the ecu detect's a fault, ie brake light switch, it gets rather confused as you accelerate but the signal from the switch is saying that you are slowing down and as a result it limits the power output usually around the 2500 rpm area , first fix the switch or switches as there are two depending which model then road test to see if power loss is still there

Does this only occur on vehicles with the bulb outage system? because I had the brake lights stuck on, on my VW T4 and I disconnected the switch but didnt suffer any power loss!

Funnily enough on the brake pedal! :D well no its not but you get the idea of where to start looking? look up under the dash on the brake pedal mech there will possibly be two switches? one is for the brakes the other the cruise control if fitted? the one you want is the lower one of the two, it may be as simple as the switch needs resetting or cleaning? but from other posts on the subject it's just as easy to replace the switch as it will fail again!

the switch untwists to remove it, but be careful as the mounting bracket and surrounding steel work is sharp

with the new switch in place press and hold down the brake pedal, now pull the plunger out of the switch to it's maximum travel, then release the brake pedal, when the pedal pushes the switch back in that it's job done
