My galaxu ghia 1.9 TDI auto (less than 30k miles) has lost all drive from the gearbox. It started with excessive revs and reduce pulling power and within 15 miles I lost all drive and had to get the AA to deposit the car at the local ford dealer.

The oil level was apparently checked and OK and the car was put into a specialist auto repairer.

He said a new gearbox and torque converter were required at

Thanks for the reply. I live in Northamptonshire.

I'm getting a second opinion just in the case the first garage is trying to fleece me .Could it be an oil pump failure? .It just seems a bit odd that the box has gone after just 30,000 miles.

I lost all drive in my V6 auto.

Under the car was a pool of oil (it was ok when I parked up)

Are you sure it's not lost it's oil? Get someone else to check. Could just be a seal gone like mine.

..and what else did they have to say? Any closer to diagnosing the problem ?

I have had some further advice from the auto repair shop.

They suspect it is a reverse piston that has split. Although they had not opened my gearbox they had received FIVE! Galaxy autos this week with the same problem.

They said there appeared to be a fundamental flaw in it's design and they are replacing the piston with a Swedish made part. They said if they replaced the part with the std Ford part the same problem would occur in 30k miles.

All the Galaxy's they have repoaired are 01/02 registrations.

I asked the local Ford dealer if this was was a known problem but they said not.

I am going to contact Ford UK to understand if this a much bigger problem for Galaxy Auto's.

If anyone has needed a replacement box could they check with the auto repair shop to see if this is the same problem and let me know.

Many thanks
