Guest j_mchattie Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 I just failed my MOT because my steering lock was playing up. The car was stolen before I got it, and the scum broke the steering lock. It sometimes clicks with the key out, and no longer locks. When the key is in, there is no clicking. However, the MOT man wasnt best pleased, as he tought it could lock at any minute (hasnt for the past 22,000 miles) - it also pased the last 2 MOTs with the same fault. Anyway, I ripped it all apart, and wedged the locking lever open. I glued it, wedged it and wired it in - so theres no chance of it locking. Even with the lever in the locked position, the steering still doesnt lock - it just clicks. But, is there a better way of removing the steering lock? it looks like its actually cast into the column, and cant be removed - is this correct? Thanks Quote
Guest musotechy Posted June 17, 2005 Report Posted June 17, 2005 This happened to me on my old Vauxhaul, it may apply here too. You should be able to remove it by taking the lower half of the alloy casing off from around the ignition area. The steering lock itself is just a little metal wedge that has a spring behind it. There may even be a little inspection plate that you can open and remove from there. I would double check to make sure that it won't fail an MOT if it 'hasn't' got a lock at all. Quote
