 lost left side of screen while driving home on Friday B)

I'm getting it fixed tomorrow, thank goodness for screen cover insurance.

How long should the car be off the road for.

Heated screen on MKII galaxy.... how do I test it works on the new one with no frost around??? Are there any gremlins to watch out for during and after fitting.

Many thanks

The best bit of advice I can give on this topic is dont let RAC auto glass do it! B) the last three screens they have done for me have leaked! even the dried water trails left on the inside of the glass are NOT according to the jumped up A##E wipe of a manager at the northampton branch proof of a leak  I cant imagine what is then?

there have been cases of heated screens not working after replacement due to the cable above the rear view mirror not being connected after replacement! and IIRC in one case they bust off the stud and stuck the cable in place with the mastic they stick the screen in with!

Has anyone else got any advice on this subject.

My screen has been scratched by the wipers by the previous owner, in this low winter sunshine it has a bad effect on visability .

Does anyone know if its possible to have it polished out as they dont seen to be deep and would rather that than having screen replaced as it is leakproof.

Cheers folks

Autoglass do a windscreen repair service, but it only mentions chips. Probably worth calling them to find out if they can polish out scratches too

This is VERY good advice... RAC Autowindscreens managed to put a huge slash through the dashboard of my old Audi A4 during their fifth attempt to fit the screen properly. Their use of a non-OEM (in other words a cheap copy) windscreen didn't help, as they could never get the scuttle cover to actually touch the base of the screen. Finally they used a proper Audi screen and got a dash repairer in, but the dash was never the same again.

I would never use RAC they just fitted a new screen in my transit...first time it rained it poured in when I rang to complain they basically said tough luck our fitter mentioned you had some rust around the screen and hence your warranty is now void !!!. The guy never said if i fit this screen you won't have any come back, and only after some heavy complaints to their head office did they agree to remove the screen whilst I got the rust removed then they would re-fit it.

Terrible customer service from a large company, thank goodness my Galaxy screen is OK.

Autoglass and others alike, seem to be the best bet from experience, as that is all they do, day in day out. They've fitted thousands of replacment windscreens with heated elements, and you'd be hard pushed to find a local fitter who knows the job better than them, even on the Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambras. They also offer a 12 month guarantee on all work carried out, under your car insurance. My father in-law had to have all glass replaced in his car when it was vandalised during a small riot in a local town a few years ago ! They did a good job.

If you are having this done under insurance and have later problems, you could always take it up with your insurance company, they will have a lot more influence over the workshops than you could. If the workshop loses one customer who may well never visit again, it does not affect them much, if major insurers refuse to use them they could go out of business.

Thanks for the info guys.

Went to Auto Glass this morning to ask about poloshing the scratches out but they dont do it.

They say it could leave sqwirly patterns on the glass, i spose it makes sence.

So im just going to have to bite the bullet and get a new one fitted and hope it doesnt leak

i used RAC and it all seems ok.

i had a heated screen fitted to my mk2 alhambra and it works ok.

however they did cut a bit of the dashboard at the base of the windscreen

but overall much better than a cracked screen

Another bit of experience with the Galaxy windscreen is that repairers that come to you or roadside repairers will not do the Galaxy outside of a garage due to the size of the glass and the fitting.

The easiest way to break a Galaxy windscreen is to remove the wiper blade then let go of the wiper arm and as it springs back against the window it breaks it. Seen to it happen to a work colleagues car.

Cannot remember who it was who did my screen (they were on the Triumph Trading Estate in Edmonton) but they sheared the earth lug off behind the courtesy light and stuck the heated screen earth to the body with black mastic.
