Ian in Northampton Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 My wife just brought the Galaxy home. The handbrake warning light was flashing on and off and there was a warning 'ping ping'. What's that all about then? I couldn't find a reference to it in the handbook... (I subsequently drove the car and the problem seemed to have gone away.) Quote
Guest MATT Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 maybe she had left the handbrake on while driving? matt Quote
Ian in Northampton Posted April 7, 2005 Author Report Posted April 7, 2005 Matt: I didn't know you knew her? Quote
Topbloke Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Hi ian , i know that the vw T4's do make this noise if you drive with the handbrake even slightly on so perhaps this is the same on yours try it and see !!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) Quote
Guest MATT Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Matt: I didn't know you knew her? :) ...don't all women leave the handbrake on...THEY THINK ITS AN AIR FRESHNER, BECAUSE WHEN THEY TAKE IT OFF, THE SMELL OF BURNING GOES AWAY! matt Quote
Ian in Northampton Posted April 9, 2005 Author Report Posted April 9, 2005 Thanks Andy. I'll do that and see what happens. Matt: LOL! Quote
Ian in Northampton Posted April 13, 2005 Author Report Posted April 13, 2005 Well, I tried driving with the handbrake on sufficiently to have the dashboard warning light on, but no 'ping ping'. Hmmm... Quote
Ivor Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 I did this for the first time a couple of weeks ago  Mine flashed the light and did the ping ping. The ping ping brought my attention to the light and when I felt the handbrake it was on! (sorry - for the above please read: My wife did this........) Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 (Should I mention this?)I have this problem when using the handbrake to check speed on long downhill inclines ...... Quote
Guest MATT Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 I have this problem when using the handbrake to check speed on long downhill inclines ...... ... i don't understand what you mean? are you using the handbrake to slow the car down while moving? matt  Quote
Dave-G Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 B) "Ping" - :( :( Pong B) "(Should I mention this?)I have this problem when using the handbrake to check speed on long downhill inclines ......" B) Is this from a previous post ivor? B) Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 ... i don't understand what you mean? are you using the handbrake to slow the car down while moving? Yes. This is what the handbrake is for, according to the MOT. It doesn't have to hold the car on a slope, only provide enough deceleration if you have to use it to stop the car in an emergency (eg footbrake failure). Quote

It doesn't have to hold the car on a slope, only provide enough deceleration if you have to use it to stop the car in an emergency (eg footbrake failure). You're only supposed to do that sort of thing in emergancy situations - otherwise you are likely to "boil" your brake fluid and loose the brakes anyway!!! I know this from experience (old Audi 80 with sticking handbrake - VERY scary when the brakes fail completely :D ) Quote

This is what the handbrake is for, according to the MOT. It doesn't have to hold the car on a slope, only provide enough deceleration if you have to use it to stop the car in an emergency (eg footbrake failure). I beg to differ. Set figures are often used by testers for rolling road handbrake tests, however the correct method is to calculate the required braking efficiency for the weight of the vehicle using the tables at the rear of your MOT testers' handbook. The handbrake then should be 16% of the figure, as: 16% parking brake efficiency equates to a vehicle holding on a gradient of 1 in 6.25 Nothing to do with deceleration. Perhaps you are confusing it with a hand-operated secondary braking system. Quote
Sharanfx Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Just check your brake fluid level, on VW's this is connected up to this warning as well. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 16% parking brake efficiency equates to a vehicle holding on a gradient of 1 in 6.25 "equates to" - the MoT does not require the handbrake to be tested to see if it will hold the car on an incline. Quote
sad_git Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Speaking MOT language, it is properly called a 'parking brake'. Quote
sad_git Posted April 16, 2005 Report Posted April 16, 2005 Interestingly, vehicles with single circuit braking systems have to make 25% efficiency on the parking brake instead of 16% for dual circuit. This suggests that it is considered as an emergency brake and parking brake on single circuit systems and just parking brake on dual circuits. Quote

The test is to ensure the parking brake is capable of holding a car on a 1 in 6.25 incline. It is nothing to do with a secondary braking system, indeed, and I can also assure you of this, if on your driving test you touched the handbrake whilst the vehicle was moving you would fail on a serious safety failure. Guest chapi Posted April 25, 2005 Report Posted April 25, 2005 It took me 5 minutes to realise my Ping Ping was I'd left the indicator ON when I removed the key from the ignition! :) Quote
