Ian in Northampton Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 My wife just brought the Galaxy home. The handbrake warning light was flashing on and off and there was a warning 'ping ping'. What's that all about then? I couldn't find a reference to it in the handbook... (I subsequently drove the car and the problem seemed to have gone away.) Quote

The ping ping brought my attention to the light and when I felt the handbrake it was on! (sorry - for the above please read: My wife did this........) Quote

It doesn't have to hold the car on a slope, only provide enough deceleration if you have to use it to stop the car in an emergency (eg footbrake failure). Quote

You're only supposed to do that sort of thing in emergancy situations - otherwise you are likely to "boil" your brake fluid and loose the brakes anyway!!! I know this from experience (old Audi 80 with sticking handbrake - VERY scary when the brakes fail completely :D ) Quote

Set figures are often used by testers for rolling road handbrake tests, however the correct method is to calculate the required braking efficiency for the weight of the vehicle using the tables at the rear of your MOT testers' handbook. The handbrake then should be 16% of the figure, as: 16% parking brake efficiency equates to a vehicle holding on a gradient of 1 in 6.25 Nothing to do with deceleration. Perhaps you are confusing it with a hand-operated secondary braking system. Quote

This suggests that it is considered as an emergency brake and parking brake on single circuit systems and just parking brake on dual circuits. Quote

The test is to ensure the parking brake is capable of holding a car on a 1 in 6.25 incline. It is nothing to do with a secondary braking system, indeed, and I can also assure you of this, if on your driving test you touched the handbrake whilst the vehicle was moving you would fail on a serious safety failure.
