I have just changed oil on my 1.9tdi. I was unable to get the filter off to replace. I have been told that the filter should be changed every time the oil is re newed. Is this correct.

Also, can any one advise me of the torque setting for the sump plug on the diesel engine?

As usual with newcomers, we are left guessing details about your car, i.e. engine variant, year etc.

 

According to my crystal ball(s).....I guess you have a Mk1 Tdi 90 or 110 bhp engine. (i.e. not PD)

 

Yes, oil filters should always be changed with the oil....

 

OE (Original equipment) oil filters on these engines (metal cannister types) usually have a hex head or a slot welded underneath them to allow you to use a socket/spanner/screwdriver to loosen them. One good reason for replacing with an OE type! If you cant undo it with two hands then its been overtightened. When fitting a new filter, smear a little oil on the rubber sealing ring, spin it on until the sealing ring just contacts the mating face then tighten by between 1/4 and 1/3 turn. Refill oil and check for leaks after a short run....

 

If its on too tight, you might have to resort to hammering a large screwdriver through the side to get leverage (messy!!!). I've never found those band tools of any use.....

 

Don't forget to replace the copper washer on the sump plug (although I rarely do :lol: ). I'm too idle to look up torque setting, as its a soft copper seal, just don't overtighten!! Watch you don't crossthread.....very expensive mistake.....

 

Of course PD engines are completely different....(paper filter and replace entire sump plug....)

hi, you can get a cap that fits over bottom of oil filter and grips it , you loosen it with a ratchet bar job done, you can get from a good car shop,

i run a car shop(dont know if its good or not ) if you want one let me know and you can buy one from me. call motorcare .01977 704771 daytime.

Hi seatkid, I was reading this thread and wondered why you say replace the whole sump plug. My Galaxy (04 zetec tdi 115 ) is just over a year old now and I am going to give it it's first oil change ( It's only done 5000 miles ). Is the filter housing awkward to remove ? would I be better getting the 76mm cap tool for that ? I am going to use Millers XFE oil as recommended elsewhere on the site. Ford couldn't give me the oil mentioned in the hand book -- said they got it in bulk and couldn't sell me a can of it !!! :D

The sump plug on the non-PD diesels is 30Nm and you should use a new copper washer.

 

The TIS says for the PD engines "Install a new oil-drain plug washer, install the oil drain plug" No mention of a new plug.

Trouble is, if the washer is of "soft" material such as copper, it has a nasty habit of deforming (the inner diameter becomes small) so that you cannot unscrew it past the threaded part of the sump plug, hence you need a new plug to go with the new washer.
