Guest thewife Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Hello all, I am a newbie to this site but I am sure that someone out there can help me. I am currently looking at two Galaxy's, one of which I am sure to buy before the end of this week. I don't wont to make a costly mistake by buying the wrong one. This is where you help comes in. Can you please let me know which is the most reliable, what major problems can arise with the V6 engine, what the fuel consumption is like on both Gal's and any other information that you can think of that will help me make my decision. Car no1:- Ford Galaxy 2.8 V6 Ghia,7 seater, manual, petrol, 1996 (P)82,000 miles, ABS, Air Con, Central LockingChild Locks, Climate Control, Electric mirrors, Electric WindowsPower Steering, traction control. Has had 2 owners from new, small dent to the rear quarter panel, air con needs regassing and cam belt will need to be changed (how much????)Car is only MOT'd to July CAR 2:- Ford Galaxy 2.0l petrol7 seater, manual, 1996 (P)76,000 miles, 2 owners from new,Air Con, Climate control, Central locking, electic windowsPAS, ABS, air bagMOT to March 06Aparantly the cam is on a chain, so no cam belt changes needed. The drivers side window regulator has broken (how much to repair???)Has had new engine coil restrictor. Any information on both cars would be most helpful. Also what sort of price do you think I should be looking at paying for these cars??? Thanks again. Hurry hurry with your responses I need to make a decision soon. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 The cams on the VR6 are also chain driven, these can be expensive to replace as can the damage done when they fail :o usual cause of failure is due to the tensioners and followers wearing! normally around the 100k+ mark :o the only belts that need changing on these engines are the aux drive belts if possible get the AC sorted before you buy it or get a reasonable amount off the price because it may cost a fortune to get it fixed! small dent in rear quarter panel! dont worry unless its really bad as you sure to get a few more :) Has had new engine coil restrictor........ more likely to be the engine roll restrictor  lower rear engine/gearbox mount , its there to stop the engine rocking back and forth and breaking things! like AC pipes and so on :o in my book there is only one option! but I'm biased :) I'm sure someone from the old fogey brigade will allong shortly as songs of praise has now finished and tell you to buy a TDI as they are so much better :P ( hey admin any chance of a yawning smilie?) :) Quote
johnb80 Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 in my book there is only one option! but I'm biased  I'm sure someone from the old fogey brigade will allong shortly as songs of praise has now finished and tell you to buy a TDI as they are so much better :) ( hey admin any chance of a yawning smilie?) :) Get the V6, it's brilliant, you'll never want for anything more (even if you did you wouldn't be able to afford it being a V6 driver), 0-60 in 5 seconds or less, unlimited top speed, corners so well you burst blood vessels and as for it's ability to smoke tyres there's none better. The depreciation from new could only be topped by a house brick in freefall. Forget the TDi's theyre cr*p, hold there price well, uses so little fuel that if it improved just a little more it would be filling it's own tank up as you drove along, it can just smoke the tyres if you try hard and of course that good old 0-60 time is going to take a couple of seconds longer and that really is the BIG DEAL. Regards - JB :) Quote
greg_68 Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 My only words of advice would be to check everything and I mean everything works, all electric windows, central locking, cruise control, switches, certainly everything electrical. Tyres around Quote

johnb80 Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 It's a good job we don't take offence here  one day we must meet up, I'll buy you a drink (I know you can't afford to buy your own running a V6) as a reward for being a sparring partner. TTFN - JB Quote
