Jeff115 Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 :D Can anyone remember finding green foamy stuff inside your oil filler cap ? :D I recall coming across a description of what caused this but I can't remember what. The usual story - dealer serviced - he assured me that he'd filled with 505-01 spec. oil - even gave me a second can, well he charged me for it. Turns out that it's actually 505-00 and not 505-01 and he over-filled it :D again as usual - Fuch's Titan Supersyn 5w/40. Anyway had a barney with him on the phone today - I might as well talk to the wall :D Later,J. Can anyone explain the green foam under the oil filler cap?Regards,J. Quote
NikpV Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 If this was a ford dealer he should be draining it out and replacing with ford formula sd - I've read several examples of dealers doing this - on the forum. Get in touch with ford or at least tell the dealer you have and see if they will cooperate. Out of a 5l container you should get about 0.5l back - I usually ask for this to do top ups between services and the 'wag' of a service manager usually makes some comment about oil in the passenger footwell. :D Quote
Jeff115 Posted April 3, 2005 Author Report Posted April 3, 2005 Yes, thanks, Nik, I don't think I'll be using him again as he does'nt listen :) I gave him all the info. on my inoperative booster heater and he still could not fix it - if I can suss it with VAG-COM and rudimentary facilities then he should be well able to :) Fuch's comes in 4 litres - The only reason he had a second can to give me was that that he used some out of the second can to to OVERfill the sump  Regards,Jeff. Marky Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Buy your oil BEFORE you take it to the dealers for service...tell them it isthere to use and can they leave the can with the 1/2litre that will be leftin the boot as it is yours !!!!I asked for the price of the Formula SD 505.01 spec oil at the parts deptthe other day, man behind desk (who had been really helpful) laughedand said he had never heard of it and that they would use 'standard oil from their big tank'. After I explained to him about the PD engine he checked on the system and apologised admitting that you learn somethingnew every day!!! Oh man !!! Quote
seatkid Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Can anyone explain the green foam under the oil filler cap? Dunno, but foaming at the mouth is said to indicate madness or foot & mouth.... Quote
Jeff115 Posted April 4, 2005 Author Report Posted April 4, 2005 Thanks, seatkid, tell me, is forgetfulness a symptom ? cos' I still cannot remember where I read about what caused the green stuff but on looking through my saved links I re-found thishttp://www.chris-longhurst.com/carbibles/index.html - great for an afternoon's reading. Tell me also, is the sudden urge to violent action also a symptom? cos' I feel like doing a Michael Douglas / Falling down rendition in his workshop with a baseball bat B) Only kidding (hah, pun not intended!) Is dual personality a facet too...... Later,Jeff. where did I put that bat, hmmmm..... Quote
iainkirk Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Foaming on a PD engine is due to excessive oil volume, so I'm told. Quote
Jeff115 Posted April 4, 2005 Author Report Posted April 4, 2005 Sounds right, if the over-filled oil in the sump is slapping against the bottom of the pistons Quote
Guest Dangermouse Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 New to this Oil thing, so what it all about just got a 130 Ghia, oil change not due for 6months or 5k ( always have before anybody asks), just wondered what all this OIL take is about Sorry Newbie question Quote
iainkirk Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Dangermouse, check your oil as the PD engines do have quite a high oil consumption, especially when new. That's why it tells you on the fuel filler flap to check every 1000 miles - that's almost as often as a Mazda RX8! Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 Do check your oil when the car is new; on another website a few months ago, a tale was told of a privately purchased new diesel Mazda MPV. The salesman told the buyer that it was a Japanese Mazda, excellent quality and you won't need to check the oil. Just bring it back for its first service.Needless to say, a few thousand miles later the engine went BANG due to no oil. Purchaser had never checked the oil level so was not covered by warranty. Salesman's talk was dismissed - of course you have to check the oil level, it's in the handbook etc etc.Result was one unhappy private buyer who had to stump up several thousand pounds for a new engine. You have been warned ! Quote
Marky Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 DM Do a search on oil and you will find many posts!!! Basically... The diesel engines used are VW Pump Deuse (PD) engines. These require a specific oil to VW 505.01 spec. Ford's own brandis called Formula SD, VW's is called Quantum. You need to makesure that your dealer is aware of this as not many seem to be and will fill your nice new 130 tdi with standard Ford diesel oil which isno good for your engine!! As i said earlier, buy your oil BEFORE you take it for its serviceand tell them to use the oil you have supplied... HTHMark Quote
NikpV Posted April 9, 2005 Report Posted April 9, 2005 And ask them not to overfill, another popular problem, I usually get about 0.5l left in the formula SD can - IIRC it takes about 4.5l for an oil change. Quote
Guest adekeys Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 are all the diesels like this or was it just newer than 97's R Plates? Quote
Guest Dangermouse Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Thanks Peeps.. Final Question: Have you a Part number (Ford) for the Oil ??? Quote
Marky Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Ford Formula SD Oil Part Number.... 1130310 Price: Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 are all the diesels like this or was it just newer than 97's R Plates? Only facelifted models with PD TDI engines require the 505.01 spec oil; VW-badged cars on variable servicing intervals should use 506.01 spec oil, but if you have servicing done annually or every 10,000 miles maximum (rather than taking advantage of the variable servicing intervals) then it is OK to use 505.01 Quote
Masked Marauder Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 are all the diesels like this or was it just newer than 97's R Plates? You just need semi-synthetic. The PD engines Ivor refers to are 115, 130 & 150 bhp. Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 These require a specific oil to VW 505.01 spec. Ford's own brandis called Formula SD, VW's is called Quantum. Do the 115 engones use that same as the 130's? Also, dare I ask, what do the other oil companies call it. Can a suitable oil be purcahsed from, say, Halfords? :( Cheers.Oggy. Quote
Jeff115 Posted April 13, 2005 Author Report Posted April 13, 2005 So can I take it that none of you guys, excluding seatkid (maybe :( ) and iankirk know anything about green stuff underneath the filler cap?But yez are always givin' out about your sumps being overf-filled too???? Anyway, Oggie, VW spec oil :( No, VW 505-01 vs VW 506-01 e.g. Castrol 505-01, Havoline 505-01, Esso 505-01, Millers XFE-PD...once it's SAE 5W-40 and says that is specifically meets VW 505-01 spec on the back of the bottle. Jeff115 Posted April 14, 2005 Author Report Posted April 14, 2005 Mark,You go ahead and meander as much and as many times as you like :( Who mentioned green fluffy oil anyway? Everyone else, sorry if I seemed smart or testy, I was attempting humour, as my other posts would back up :( Later,J. Quote
