bigdaddy Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Hi guys, read in the introduction place about auto's slipping, I bought a 98 2.3 ghia x, 4 speed box I think : so smooth when changing gear I cant tell : any way, when i kickdown to 3rd it seems to take ages for the gal to speed up, I thought it was just bloody slow, but the thread I seen as given me new ideas, is the jacto box fitted to all gals, could it be lack of fluids (which I doubt due to smooth gear changes) I need the info asap as I have only 21 days left to complain, Thank You for any help given :D Quote
Denis Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 I used to own a T reg 2.3 auto which is pretty much what you've got and it used to go like stink when I floored the gas pedal, there is a definite 'change down' effect. If the box changes normally the rest of the time maybe it's something simple... I wonder if there's a switch on the accelerator pedal mounting that's not detecting the pedal is pushed down fully? Mauser Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 Don't know answer but I can confirm my 2.3 goes like stink also when floored, even with 100K on the clock... surprises me every time I am pleased to say.Would check revs against speed/gear selected ?. Might be worth trying the gears in manual it might show something up ?.Sorry no other ideas :D.SimonPS Hi lads hope you all well, Howard, Seat etc :D. Quote
bigdaddy Posted March 31, 2005 Author Report Posted March 31, 2005 Cheers Denis and Mauser, will try and hold the gears when I go to work tonight, let you know how i get on. Quote
Topbloke Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 i own the same spec model and i am surprised by the lack of get up n go just thought it was normal ,had car from 3 years old but had only done 850 miles (no thats not a typo) and has been same all along please let us/me know if you find anything Quote
bigdaddy Posted April 1, 2005 Author Report Posted April 1, 2005 Ok I will try and word this so it is understandable :::::: at about 40mph when I kickdown from 4th to 3rd the revs seem to sit around 3000 to 3750 and the gal seems to take ages to move any faster, above 4000 revs the car seems to behave normally, if it had a clutch I would swear it was slipping, around about town i cant fault the gal, but I bought it to replace a tired 95 v6 espace and I need to tow a 14ft boat and four monsters (sorry, my darling loving children) I found a good boot up the slip road on to motorway the gal was quick, so now what, do I take it back to the non ford dealer and explain the problem and then leave the shop when he starts to laugh (auto box slipping lol) or take it to ford for a look and see what they say, time is important as I have only 20 days left Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 1, 2005 Report Posted April 1, 2005 If the revs aren't rising after the box has changed down, doesn't sound like a box or fluid level problem to me. What happens if you just gently increase pressure on the accelerator, rather than kicking it? Will engine speed rise slowly but surely, or is it also reluctant to rev? Could be throttle pot perhaps ? Denis Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Thinking about this a bit more, I can remember feeling dissapointed with the kick down on my 2.3 whan I first got it, sometimes nothing seemed to happen. I eventually found that to make the car kick down reliably you had to floor the gas pedal quickly and hard- in other words, tell it who's boss! It was a lot better then. http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk/html/emoticons/Thumbup.gif Quote
GSMGuy Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 If the revs stay relatively static, and the car speed increases upto them, or the engine races away when you accelerate, it's a sure sign that one of the clutch packs in a Jatco box are on their way... If so, the problem will become worse and spread to the lower gears, apparently - it gets so bad that the gal won't even move off!! Picking my babe back up tomorrow with a fully reconned box and torque converter... Brought about by the symptoms above... Will keep ya all informed!! Mike Quote
Denis Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Does the 115 auto use the same gearbox as the rest of the range then GSMGuy? Just I get the impression that the diesel version suffers more failures than the others. http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk/html/emoticons/uhm.gif Quote
bigdaddy Posted April 4, 2005 Author Report Posted April 4, 2005 If the revs stay relatively static, and the car speed increases upto them, or the engine races away when you accelerate What you have said is basically what is happening The " slipping " happens only when I kick down, I tried manual changing when I went to work, from 2nd throw to 4th on the motorway slip road and the car was brill, very quick and no slipping. GSMGuy Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 AFAIK, the Jatco is used in all of them - I think the reason the diesels suffer more is simply because they put 300 nm+ of torque through the box.. Strangely, I found mine to behave better in the lower gears too.. Which is weird.. Mike Quote
Guest MATT Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 The " slipping " happens only when I kick down, I tried manual changing when I went to work, from 2nd throw to 4th on the motorway slip road and the car was brill, very quick and no slipping. ...i think this might be a throtle problem, as apose to a auto box problem, as it worked fine in 'tiptronic' mode, as it is the same gears that are used, i dont see how it could be the actual box, more the electrics. have you tried, when moving, take your foot COMPLETELY off the gas, and then 'slam' it to the floor, very fast. give it a go, matt Quote
bigdaddy Posted April 5, 2005 Author Report Posted April 5, 2005 matt seen your post to late, while try it in the morning, I took kids out today full load in car and it behave brillantly, no slipping nothing, so even more confussed now Quote
