What do people use to remove the oil filter NUT. I have seen some one mention they use a set of plumbing plier & someone else has said use a socket" 76mm A/F with 14 flutes.

Thanks

Jonathan

 DO NOT use pliers,Beleive it or not,the "nut " is made of a very hard, high temp but brittle plastic...there will be no warning when this is about to break (I am told)

snap on supplied me a 76mm oil filter remover for mercs,bm's sharans etc but have used a bike chain thing before but it scared the hell out of me cos i did not need the stress of breaking it but its the best i had at the time , the snap on kit cost me the grand sum of a tenner (iirc) will give you the part number if you want it and know some one whom uses a dealer!!!!!!!!!!!!

I spent all day yesterday trying to locate a 76mm 14 flute removal tool. It was tough but I finally got one. It is a Franklin TA391. The problem is that when I tried to use it I found my 2004 Galaxy actually has 12 flutes. If finding a tool with 14 flutes was hard 12 flutes is nigh impossible. There are a couple of websites in the states and Taiwan that seem to have it as part of large sets. The cap also has a hexagonal nut of approx 36mm AF too. Does anyone know where I can get a 12 flute removal tool? Has anyone used the 36mm nut? What would the main dealers do?

What would the main dealers do?

Change the oil without changing the filter?

I was simply adding my advice to this thread that the correct tool should be used to prevent damage to the filter cap - you will have noticed that my car has the same engine as Jonathan's (who started this topic). Incidentally, I have heard that the 36mm central 'nut' can be used on the latest engines - try asking Sykes Pickavant or Snap-on for their advise. Using a strap or chain would be more than a little risky.

I have now bought 36mm socket from Halfords which turns the cap very nicely. The next problem is where to get a new oil filter from. I asked at Halfords and they said that they don't make a 130PS Galaxy only a 90 or 115. They don't have an oil filter for a 130PS Galaxy anyway. I assume that I have to drain the engine before I can take the filter out. Is there anywhere apart from a dealer to get a new oil filter from? I live in the Warrington to Liverpool area. Thanks. PS I changed the oil last time without changing the filter but I'm not doing that again!

Is it your car? (Sorry, couldn't resist  )

Why not buy a filter from the dealer together with the correct grade of oil!

I changed my oil filter and what a bugger to get off (fraud service)

I have a chain tool, but it wont fit in the tight confines of the engine bay.

so i used the time honoured trick of a large screwdriver rammed through the canister.

lovely jubly.
