Dear All

 

I need your help!

 

My Galaxy 1.9 Tdi 98, is now with a problem. It is very dificullt to start in cold. I need to put the accelarator down during several time and start it for several times.

No other problem, it star very well the rest of the day, but in next day is again the same.

I take it to the garage, and they told me that is not air in the diesel system, so they change a relay, but it is the same. Now they star talkink about other problems that for me are very concern, no compression, and other very very expensive matters.

 

Does anybody have similar problem or can help me ?

I assume you realise you have to wait for the glow plug light to extiniguish before attempting to start a diesel engine?

 

If you do then....check the Glow plugs, start with the fuse, then the relay, and then the Glow Plugs themselves.

....so almost certainly the compression is OK - and a compression check should be comparatively simple and inexpensive to perform anyway. If you only have trouble in starting the engine when it is cold, it is almost certainly a glowplug problem.

Take out the glow-plugs and connect them up one at a time to a charged 12v battery, it should glow almost instantly, if not it's broken.

Yes, I wait for the light goes of. i think compression is OK, because i have the same performace as before.

 

I had seen the fuse, get a new relay, and still in the same. I will see now the glow-plugs. I believe that there are soame problem with other sensor.

 

I still need some more opinions.

Why would they only affect cold starts?

I really wish to understand why just this sintoms in cold ?

:lol: hmmph....Glow plugs are necessary to increase the temperature of the (cold) air charge in a (cold) piston and ensure compression ignition of the fuel....if they don't work, the minimum ignition temperature can't be reached when everything is cold and engine speed is low....

 

Why would they <sensors> only affect cold starts?
If the turnover speed is low (i.e. when cold), the output of these sensors is low (or so I believe) so if they are dodgy then it could be the difference between working and not working. (I only mentioned crankshaft and camshaft sensors as joczeze insisted on the "what if its not the glow plugs" question.:blink: )

 

Which reminds me >>joczeze<< Have you checked you dont have a bad battery??? After the battery, the most likely is the glow plugs.....

 

Please don't ask what else it could be until you eliminate these first!!!!! :unsure:

Thanks for your ideas. Battery has ne month, and is n good conditions. I have to tell that external temperatures are about 6 to 9, and never negative numbers.

I will see the glow.

this sounds like another one of those we aint seen of these before* threads.....
