seatkid Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 :o :D :D  Failed MOT again this year. Another track rod end! (58,000 miles) Where do VAG source their parts? Some back street in Afganisthan? Quote
Guest Dunny Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Mine failed last week with a worn track rod end (40 000 miles), got the dealer to replace it as I couldn't be arsed. Did you change it yourself ? Quote
Dave-G Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005  They seem to need replacing at about 20 ~ 30K :o Quote
Bigjeeze Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 This is an interesting topic - I currentlyhave two Galaxy's - My wife's has done 116K miles - has had two new Track Rod ends after 85K - other than that just service items and the odd few faults. My MK2 has after 65K had new track rod ends and now needs the drop links - Why is it that the Mark 1 has the original drop links with no problems but the later model lasts less time. Getting a bit fed up with this poor quality stuff! Jeeze Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Part of the reason is that the motor manufacturers have year-on-year price REDUCTION agreements with their suppliers, so each year the suppliers look for ways of cutting costs of their components. Not all of them tell the manufacturers what they are doing to the parts in order to achieve the required savings, so that they maintain (or improve) their profit ratio......... Quote

JeezeMy 53 plate had both drop links replaced at 14000 miles :o And the lacquer is bubbling and coming off my wheels - back to dealer methinks. Apart from that it's been good - now at 20500 miles  Quote
seatkid Posted March 25, 2005 Author Report Posted March 25, 2005 Did you change it yourself ? No... thats probably why the steering wheel's no longer straight when going straight!  Quote
Marky Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 Kid...do you not practice what you preach (signature).... Ninjakev...get to the dealers QUICK with those wheels...I have justfound out that alloys are only covered for the first twelve months, then they will only offer you a discount towards the replacement cost...get to the dealers on Tuesday.... Dave-G Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005  A reasonably straight 3M lenth of 50MMx50MM timber would be more reliable than kwikfits on uppingham road in leicester  Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted April 13, 2005 Report Posted April 13, 2005 I needed a track rod end to get through the MOT at 3 years and 43,000 miles. I don Quote

JeezeMy 53 plate had both drop links replaced at 14000 miles :) Off side drop link replaced today under warranty. 19500 miles, but it's been rattling for a couple of thousand.17-month old car :o Quote
Guest mick Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 Yep, right hand drop link replaced about two months ago at around 14k, and left hand drop link has required changing for the past month. In for service next Tuesday, and hopefully they will change it then. Probably get a 'sorry mate, 'aven't got the bit. Will 'ave to re-book.Will be removing center caps prior to taking Gal into service so the garage can't damage them and the wheels any further. Will be glad when the car is out of warranty so I don't have to take it to the Oxygen Thieves of Ford. Quote
Guest stawarz Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 Do remove those caps yourself!!! All four of our wheels are corroded around the hub and guess who were the only people to ever remove the wheels..........? :) Looks like you're more likely to get corroded alloys replace under warranty to about year 2, after that forget it (ot that is what I have experienced evan after letters to Ford, etc... :o , next step small claims if I can be bothered) Quote
Guest mick Posted July 26, 2005 Report Posted July 26, 2005 With regard to the alloys, as unfortunately two (Ford) garages have taken the wheels off, I cannot pin the blame onto one garage. Having said that, when I switch wheels for steel and winter tyres, I'll get some laquer and brush it onto the scratches.I totally restored a set of badly damaged BMW alloys a few years ago - rubbed down totally, resprayed silver, and laquered. Looked the dogs danglies when I had finished. Quote
