Gear Box Trouble?

I really need some advice, my automatic Mondeo has suddenly since yesterday started to loose power when I put my foot on the accelerator, and the revs shoot up, if I take my foot off the accelerator and then gently put it on again, it slowly builds up power and is ok for a while!!!!!

 

Also the O/D button on the dashboard has suddenly decided to come on by itself after a few minutes of driving.

 

I described these symptoms to the garage who told me that it sounds like the car is missing 2nd and 4th gear and will cost possibly between 700 and 1200 quid to fix.

 

Have I given enough information for anyone to recognise these symptoms and perhaps advise me????????

First thing to check is the fluid level - have you done that yet - both when cold and warm? Don't know the 'box myself, but does it have a dipstick, or is this a dealer-only job?
