Guest j_mchattie Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Ive just been looking at my front lower grill (interesting), and there are plastic plates along the bottom half of it - the full width of the car. They look like they reduce the airflow over the radiator (quite a lot) - do they serve a purpose? or can I unclip them? I thought they might protect the radiator from stone chips, but the airflow into the engine bay is restricted enough - without plastic plates in the way. Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 If you look here, you can see what i mean http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...4536459342&rd=1 The grill has all the holes open, but mine has the lower 2 rows covered up with a single piece of plastic - clipped in place. I think after seeing this photo - i may unclip mine. Quote
Guest tubbylardo Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 I have never looked at the lower grill but as my mondeo gets hot I think I will follow your lead and take the covers off as well. Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Mine gets hot pretty quick too. It sits around the O-R when driving around on the motorway. But when i stop it rises to the middle of the M and the fan cuts in for about 30 seconds, which takes it back to start of the M. Then a few minutes later, the gets back up to middle of M and cuts in again. Ive been told this is normal. But its hardly the warmest weather here in Coventry! In the summer, the fan is going to be all the time - ill certainly take off the plastic cover tomorrow - unless anyone knows the reason for having it? Thanks Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 tubbylardo - did it make any difference to your temp? Im doing a 125 mile drive on thursday - so ill see then Quote
Guest tubbylardo Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 My front bumper must be different to yours. There are no plastic covers to remove. Besides this would only direct the air flow into the engine bay when the car is moving and not when standing still.... I can't work it out. I have had a new thermostat fitted (the old one didn't work at all). Is it just that the ford thermo's are a tad sensitive? What I have noticed is that I get an awful smell from the vents whn the car is hot. Especially in traffic. I think the clutch is on the way out and what I can smell is burning.... Other than that it's fine.... Quote
Guest tubbylardo Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 It must be a ford thing. I had a new (51) 2.0 TD as a company car for two years. It was great but in the summer the fan was on all the time. I think it may be something to do with the way ford run the power steering and alternator, air con etc off the engine loading it up thus making it hot. Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 23, 2005 Report Posted March 23, 2005 Some reasons for the bad smell (perhaps) - Burning Resistor Pack (on fan), Clogged up Cabin air filter (perhaps), Leaking exhaust. The original ford thermostats open 4 deg hotter then the after market ones. Radiator might be clogged, water pump might be faulty, temp senders might be blown (there are two). Lot of things im afraid! Quote

Some cars are set to have the cooling fan running all the time when aircon is on, to aid the efficiency of the aircon evaporator. Quote
Guest tubbylardo Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Yes Ivor it did have air con. The current model mondeo is a fantastic car. It is just a shame that most are slaughtered by the time they come up as second hand cars. Quote
