apples24 Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 hi ppl i have a 96 tdi gaxy with a box thats about to drop its internals so am seeking replacement what boxes are compatable? the engine only looks like a mk2 golf diesel engine to me Quote
seatkid Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 thinks...you need some glasses...1588cc? No, the gearbox on a 1996 Galaxy Tdi is a Ford VTX box, specially made for the Galaxy (no a Scorpio or Sierra box won't fit...) Quote
apples24 Posted March 20, 2005 Author Report Posted March 20, 2005 ok so a box from a galaxy, does it have to be a diesel one or are others the same? Quote
MrT Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 I believe that they have different overall ratios between models but I am not sure where the difference occurs, but I know that the diesels have a different mph/rpm ratio to the petrol. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Yes, has to be a diesel box, the final drive ratios are different as the diesel engine does not rev as high as a petrol. Quote
apples24 Posted March 21, 2005 Author Report Posted March 21, 2005 so they do bolt up ok then?ie a petrol box does fit to the vw diesel engine? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 No idea if it will fit, but why would you want to fit a petrol engine gearbox to a diesel? Quote
apples24 Posted March 22, 2005 Author Report Posted March 22, 2005 because ive done it many times in the past with other vehicles it really doesnt make that much didfference Quote
MrT Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 It may not make much difference on a RWD vehicle where the ratios between the diesel and petrol may differ in just the rear differential but in an integrated FWD it would make a massive difference. If you put a petrol gearbox (assuming it would fit) on the Galaxy diesel there is almost a 2:3 difference in overall gearing. The box would expect to reach the maximum speed for each gear at around 6000+rpm, yet the diesel engine would never reach this speed. Your consumption would be massively increased as you rpm would be higher than it should be for a given speed. With all due respect, if you are not aware of the effect it would have changing from one type to another, should you be doing such work on the engine/gearbox? Quote
