thinks...you need some glasses...1588cc?

No, the gearbox on a 1996 Galaxy Tdi is a Ford VTX box, specially made for the Galaxy (no a Scorpio or Sierra box won't fit...)

I believe that they have different overall ratios between models but I am not sure where the difference occurs, but I know that the diesels have a different mph/rpm ratio to the petrol.

Yes, has to be a diesel box, the final drive ratios are different as the diesel engine does not rev as high as a petrol.

It may not make much difference on a RWD vehicle where the ratios between the diesel and petrol may differ in just the rear differential but in an integrated FWD it would make a massive difference.

If you put a petrol gearbox (assuming it would fit) on the Galaxy diesel there is almost a 2:3 difference in overall gearing. The box would expect to reach the maximum speed for each gear at around 6000+rpm, yet the diesel engine would never reach this speed. Your consumption would be massively increased as you rpm would be higher than it should be for a given speed.

With all due respect, if you are not aware of the effect it would have changing from one type to another, should you be doing such work on the engine/gearbox?
