PopDorset Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 Does anyone have any knowledge of how to enable continental style, automatic daytime permanent dipped headlight illumination?...I guess it must be possible somehow...Italy is the latest country to introduce this law. It's now in many countries across the EU and many drivers now voluntarily switch on in countries where it's not yet in force. Even buses do it. It has to come to the UK eventually! My vehicle is a British spec Mk1 1.9 tdi Sport. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 In order to enable the DRL's you will need a relay and a new loom for the lighting system! the DRL's are the dipped beam run at reduced power via a resistance wire, the relay switches the power to the lights via the resistance wire or the normal wire depending on whether you have the main lights switched on or not or just the ignition Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 Just remembered, somewhere on the forum is a post on these lights and where to get aftermarket sets if you interested? and here it is.............. and it was me that posted about where to get them from  Quote
SharanTDICarat Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 You could try these:http://www.hella.com/produktion/HellaPorta.../Daytime_RL.jsp TAM Quote
PopDorset Posted March 19, 2005 Author Report Posted March 19, 2005 Thanks, vr6galaxy, and SharanTDICarat, I followed up those links and also found these... http://home.swipnet.se/mixonelektronik/pro...productlist.htm ...then scroll down. That one seems particularly promising...it's a Swedish company and I guess they have a lot of experience in this. I also found this for US drivers... http://www.sav-a-life.com/Drl_intro.htm Quote
Guest grumpy one Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 Sorry, but why on earth do we need daytime running lights in this country? If its dull as dishwater out there then you turn on your side/dipped beam, if its foggy you turn on your dipped beam and /or fog lights and when it gets dark you turn on your dipped beam/ high beam as appropriate! When its day light and fine clear weather you leave your lights off and open your eyes!! At least thats how I was taught!rant finished---return to padded cell now :o Quote

If it's lit up it's moving or about to move. I spent a little time working in Sweden a few years ago and whilst at first it looked odd sfter a while it seemed very helpful even with 20/20 vision. I for one would vote in favour of it. Regards - John Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 31, 2005 Report Posted March 31, 2005 I drive with my lights all the time :D after all I'm a white van driver so how else would all the middle lane hoggers know I'm behind them? mirrors what mirrors? :D Quote
greg_68 Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Maybe of interest to note that the boffins at work state that within a year there is to be an EU directive that all countries have daytime running lights on new cars. Quote

Yes, I saw something about this earlier today too. So much for cutting greenhouse gasses when we have to produce all the extra electricity to power headlamps in broad daylight ! Quote
italiastar Posted April 27, 2005 Report Posted April 27, 2005 I first came accross this crazy ideas (DRL) last August in Italy - the law had just been introduced and no one had a clue on when the lights needed to be on - yes outside towns, but no one knew whether it applied in town. Really annoying was that Europcar had not bothered to tell me when I picked up my hired car - lost just outside Milan I stopped at a Police check to ask for directions - they clearly didn't have a clue as I didn't have the lights on and they didn't say a word. I accept that in more northern areas of the world ie. north of Watford, DRL may be useful, but I can assure you that driving down an Italian motorway in full sunshine it is not necessary. With the trend in modern cars for having to take the car to a dealer to change the bulbs, this looks like another reason to line the pockets of the motor industry. The other not so daft idea on the way is having to carry a reflective vest in the car. If the EU is serious about cutting accidents, they should ban people who get up in the morning from driving! - i'm sure that the majority of accidents are caused by people who get up in the morning! for those not tuned into my sense of humour - the above comment is not a serious one  Quote
