Hi, any clues before I resort to garage rates? There's a new dance going around....

The clutch on my otherwise great Y2K X plate tdi Alhambra has just started giving intermittent problems:

everything is normal then

-pedal goes straight to floor and will not engage any gear. :o

-turn off ignition and wait period of minutes :D

-pedal rises back to normal position :)

-clutch ok for a couple of gear changes then goes to floor again

-turn off engine

-wait few minutes for pedal to return :D

-repeat randomly :D

-problem disappears for couple of days :D

-pedal goes straight to floor etc etc etc :D

cheers

Clutch master cylinder faulty by the description.

Are you losing any brake/clutch fluid? (it is a shared reservoir)

there's been no evidence of leakage (on the floor/ground) and the brakes seem ok, Its just (4 weeks ago) been Seat serviced so I'd have expected the levels to be ok. Unfortunately following another episode and near miss on a large junction its just been loaded onto a tow-truck bound for the local friendly repair man - quoting about 50% cheaper than Seat rates should it require major clutch work.

thanks

Read my post "clutch stuff"

I had similar problems with tempermental clutch.

It's had new master, and slave cylinder, also new clutch, the problem is still there.

Fitted new resevoir cap today, problem still there!!

On further investigation, the resevoir only has one plastic lug holding it onto the master cylinder, therefore it can move around letting fluid out and air in!!

I'll be fitting this tomorrow, and if that doesn't cure it, the only thing left to replace on the entire clutch system is the pipes!!!!!!!!!!

Not bad having only had the Gal 6 weeks!!!!

Sticking release bearing?

Have you tried changing gear without using the clutch? (Don't forget to release the accelerator pedal before attempting this one.....)

Posted

did try that but once out of gear it refused to go back in, had to wait until the engine was off for a few mins and the pedal returned to normal.

I'll report back once we strip and find the cause.

Ok the laughing's stopped. :D Following the strip out it appears that

1- master cylinder has been passing leading to

2 - clutch failure leading to

3 - flywheel oveheating and distortion - not repairable.

expected bill

Had a similar problem on my old VW T4, I went through two clutches, one fly wheel and two slave cylinders before the problem was solved! the spot welds on the pedal box had failed :o this meant that when I pushed down the clutch pedal I wasnt getting full travel as the pedal box was twisting and the clutch was slipping constantly while I was changing gear

IIRC the fly wheel is a dual density job so it could be why it so dear!

B) You're all filling me with confidence! I've had very similar problems for a week but tonight the pedal dissapeared on me. I've looked all over the net and this seems to be a common problem.

May 06 at 77K I had my master Cylinder replaced. Anyway the last few months the clutch pedal has been sticking near the top, I put this down to a spring or something as after a few miles it would clear up. Well on Tuesday got in & clutch pedal is on the floor!!!!! Not again.. Anyway repair has 2 year warranty. So off on back of truck to dealer, unfortunately they have now discovered it is the slave, so gearbox off & big
