Guest paulgromit Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Do anyone out there know which spray paint, if any, would exactly match the colour of the 2.3 Zetec wheels ? I've got a couple of minor "Scuffs" on one of the wheels, through the wifes "curbing" antics, but not enough to warrant a full Chips Away refurb. Anyone got any ideas ? Many Thanks if you can help Quote
Davetheref Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Go On, you can admit it. Was it really the wife? :D I have done the same to mine and I tried blaming the wife but she wouldn't have it. She always parks about half a mile from the kerb. Quote
Marky Posted March 16, 2005 Report Posted March 16, 2005 Pop to a car paints mixer/stocker (Autopaints up here in Brum)They can then match the paint and do you a couple of aerosols, a bit more expensive than a can from your local Halfrauds etcbut at least you'll get a good match......if not try a light Mercedesmetallic silver (can't remember the exact colour/code) but I usedit to respray a full set of alloys, nice bright silver. HTH Mark PS... When you do them, take all weekend to finish them then explain to the doris that this is what happens when you 'brush' a kerb !!! Quote
Guest paulgromit Posted March 17, 2005 Report Posted March 17, 2005 Thanks Marky. I'll give it a go. Quote
Guest MATT Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 after you re-paint them, and the paint has dried, etc, give the alloys a polish or wax, it does help to give them a shine, and to give a more even looking colour. matt, let us know how you get on. Quote
Marky Posted March 19, 2005 Report Posted March 19, 2005 Sorry Paul...forgot to say...after you have painted them spray them witha couple of coats of clear lacquer...this helps the nasty brake dust offthe paint....then wax them as matt says !!! Have fun !!!! Quote
Guest paule230 Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 but at least you'll get a good match......if not try a light Mercedesmetallic silver (can't remember the exact colour/code) but I usedit to respray a full set of alloys, nice bright silver. HTH Mark PS... When you do them, take all weekend to finish them then explain to the doris that this is what happens when you 'brush' a kerb !!! It's called "Brilliant Silver" and as mentioned it is a good match for your alloys. Quote
Guest paulgromit Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Thanks to everyone for the posts to my problem (wife !!!) I went to Halfrauds yesterday to get the paint, but unfortunately, there were (typically) 2 Mercedes silvers !!!! I was going to come back on here today, to ask you all which was the correct one. In the meantime, I had a practice yesterday on my Focus Zetec, using some product called 5 Wheels. The colours not bad, a very, very slight bit darker, but definitely not too noticable. However, the Focus's alloys are a little more "intricate" so any minor colour change is not really noticed. The Galaxy Zetec wheels have much more surface area and will be easily be noticed if they've been bodged, so I will now get the right Mercedes Brilliant Silver paint, after sanding, filling and sanding them again and then follow your Spray/Wax/Polish methods. Thanks again, you've saved me loads of dosh !!!! Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Oh how I wish a can of spray paint would sort out my rims  my 17''s now sit in the corner of the garage looking a bit sad :) the 16''s are now on ;) the wife says the ride quality has improved since they were fitted! I have yet to try them, but to me they dont look right as they dont have as much presence in the wheel arch ;) the 17''s are awaiting a visit to the local wheel refurbishing company, where all the scrapes and scuffs will get seen to and a change in colour may be in order? luckily all the overtime I have been doing for the last few week ends will be in the bank soon :D not that it will spend to long in my account ;) Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Day off yesterday - went to local "agent" of Pristine Alloys; price will be "in the region of Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Any chance you could leave the car on axle stands for a couple of days while the wheels are seen to? Dave-G could make you set if you ask him nicely  Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 I've got my own axle stands thanks - but at Quote
iainkirk Posted March 26, 2005 Report Posted March 26, 2005 Ivor, Every now and again new 5-spoke Ghia alloys come up on eBay - that's where I got my spare from. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 None on eBay earlier in the week when I looked, but I'm not intending to buy just yet anyway (unless some come up at a really good price....). Still unsure about getting the rear bumper sorted - a light covering of dirt and the damage all but disappears ! Quote

Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 Interesting ... almost no tread left on tyres though :o Tempting..... but I'll leave it for now Wonder if anyone will do "angel eyes" headlamp units for the Galaxy - now that WOULD be worth bidding for ...... .... not Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 Angel eyes now theres an idea :D they would be ok ifyou had a set of the twin round lights fitted! :o Quote
Guest paulgromit Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Just to let you know, I've finished my refurb of the Focus Zetec wheels this weekend and I'm well chuffed with the results. Not wanting to teach you guys how to "Suck Eggs", but this process worked for me.... Remove wheel (obviously)Sand down any rough edgesFill imperfections with body fillerSand down with 400 grade wet and dry paper, with loads of soap until very, very smoothRub down lightly with wet and dry paper, the whole of the wheel to get key and remove old lacquerWash back and front of wheel to get rid of old dirt and other rubbishSpray with Mercedes Brilliant Silver (3 coats) waiting 10 minutes between each.Rub with polish/wax making sure you polish off all traces before Lacquering. It still looks a little light, but once you sprayed the lacquer on, it gets slightly darker.Spray with Simoniz Clear Lacquer (Cellulose as it's a higher gloss - not the Acrylic ) (3 coats) waiting 15 minutes between eachRub with polish/wax again. Fantastic !!! I did this with 2 old tired looking wheels and they look like new !!!!! Next job..... the Galaxy wheels. Can't wait to spend another weekend away from the wife !! Quote
Guest MATT Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 job sounds a good one!!!, any chance of some pictures? good luck with the galaxys wheels, matt :o Quote
Marky Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Hi Paul...sounds like you did a good job on them...my only concern isthe wax/polish BETWEEN silver and laquer...you should use a cutting compound(t-cut, G3 or the like) this will cut back any imperfections with your first threecoats giving a nice finish to laquer onto...waxing between coats can causethe paint to react/run but sounds like you got away with it :o ps...did u get the paint form halfrauds or a paint supplier in the end ?? Guest Snooper601 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Ivor, Every now and again new 5-spoke Ghia alloys come up on eBay - that's where I got my spare from. Quote
Davetheref Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Do you really need an alloy for a spare? My spare is only a steel and must admit that I've not been tempted to change it. Quote
