Just a line to thank everyone for their input re: Five gears good - two bad...

turned out to be detached cable at gearbox end.

REALLY appreciated support in identifying problem area...

Glad to hear your back up running :) keep an eye on the clips for them to pop of like that could mean that they are weak from age or use? it may be worth while seeing if yuo can get a couple of new ones to be on the safe side!

edit......

further investigation has found that the only end you can replace is the gear stick end the gear box end is part of the cable :)

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, I'm sure you are right about the problem re-occuring...

And the Haynes' manual certainly makes it clear that it's a lengthy process replacing the cables!

The cable 'pops' onto the metal ball joint on the gearbox via a plastic "socket" (a bit like a hip joint!)...so it's hardly suprising that the socket has worn...

Talking to friends revealled that this is not a problem perculiar to Ford Galaxies. All sorts of remedies have been suggested - the simplest was from a student who got four years out of his "repair" using a piece of string to hold the socket in place!

Ah, don't you just long for those care-free student days egh...when exhaust repairs were done with wire coat hangers, tin cans and gun-gum...wish someone had explained to me that you needed to empty the beans out of the can BEFORE wrapping it around the hole in the exhaust pipe!

When we had plastic sockets go slack we used to oil the metal ball joint and put super glue into the socket before snapping it on. The super glue then sets putting a new layer onto the socket.
