Hi - wonder if any one can help with this one, it is a sort of rythmic ticking (almost twice the frequency of a loud analoge clock and sounds as if coming from the passenger side in front. This ticking is present during startup first thing on a cold morning, this lasts a good half an hour of driving and the ticking gradually dies down to nothing, until the next morning. The ticking is independant of the engine revs. Any suggestions :D ?

many thanks - Victor

Hi Victor, welcome to the forum...the noise you can hear will be the infamous

auxilary (booster) heater fitted to all PD diesel engines and nothing to worry

about...if you do a search on 'auxillary heater' you will find thousands of posts

with helpful info and mickey taking from the petrol heads... :D

Well, actually, the booster heater makes a whooshing sound, a bit like a small jet turbine - The ticking is the fuel metering pump - if anyone (else) is old enough to remember, it sounds quite like the old SU electric petrol pumps fitted to cars in the 60's and 70's....

It SHOULD be coming from the area just underneath the right seat in the middle row, and not from the dash area though..

Mine sounds as if it's coming from the front passenger footwell / glovebox area and yes it does remind me of the old SU pumps.

Hmm, must be an acoustic trick, as the pump is definately clipped to part of the chassis on the offside by the side of the tank..

Wierd..

I went down to the local motor store this morning, 2 miles away. When I parked in the carpark there were some baseball hat clad hooligans comparing their Nova's and Corsa's with huge exhausts. The aux heater had fired up and was running well, of course when I parked it does the long ramp down. When I returned to my car the Nova / Corsa drivers asked what the noise was. I told them it was the next step up from turbo, a jet turbine powered turbo charger. They all now think may Galaxy is 'really cool man' :D

Just as a follow on, is there any way of turning off the aux heater? There have been a few days recently where the sun is warm but the temperature outside was cold. No matter what I did with the climate controls, the aux heater ran.

I'm not sure you would want to turn it off. The effect also warms the engine up much faster and the block works better at normal operating temp. Not sure your engine is enjoying the sunshine since it's not behind glass. :)

Regards.
