Mr T, Chromedome went for the H7 kit in 8000k colour. the same kit would do your Gal. You do have to cut a 22mm hole in the rear bover, but the kit comes prefitted with a high quality grommet, which is nice and tight fitting.

Because I used a 20mm grommet the cables were a tight fit leaving only very small gaps.

I'm going to fill these gaps with black silicon once I've had the headlight adjuster motor replaced.

Whilst at the garage the guy adjusted my headlights FOC and will adjust them again when the adjuster has been replaced.

CD, has the adjustment made any difference to the range?? I am just contemplating fitting a second set to my Gal, so I can have HID main beams too!!

GSMGuy, can't really tell about the HID's yet as my lights are on level setting 1 because the adjuster motor is knackered. When in the highest position the levelling motor would chatter and make the dip beam flicker (which I mentioned if you remember, no fault of the HID's).

I might see if I can get them adjusted to give a more uniform spread as they seem very directional with lots of shadows at the moment.

I've ordered some Osram Cool Blue H1's for my high beam because I can't afford to upgrade them to HID's at the moment. Also need to think where to put the extra ballast boxes.

I've found some Philips W5W xenon filled side lamp bulbs which are supposed to blend in better with the HID's. Doesn't look too good at the moment because the side lamps look so yellow.

These HID's are really bright :D , I've just parked up and come indoors and even the house lights look dim and yellow now.

Sorry to sound a bit slow here but are these only available for the Mk2 Galaxy or can you get them to retrofit onto a MK1 Galaxy too ? :D

Cheers

I thought to have HID's you had to have auto levelling light units, if you look at the factory fitted items on all xenon fitted cars the lights level automatically on start up each time. The gal levelling system is manual, so is this completely legal or will it be problem time when the MOT comes up ??? anyone shed any light on this ???

This has been covered before - apparently there is no requirement for an auto levelling feature on aftermarket kits, only those fitted at the time of manufacture, as they have to comply with OEM regs.. My car passed the MOT with flying colours, and the tester even did the alignment for me free of charge on the beam tester - which made a hell of a difference to the spread..

I'm waiting for a new Galaxy with Xenon's, but could be very interested in converting the main beams with an after market kit as well. Bearing in mind that the mains are often used for relatively short periods, would the start-up and then warm-up before full efficiency times make this unwise?

Cheers

Xenons do take approx 10- secs to reach full brightness after switching on... I don't find this a prolem, already having fully warmed up dipped beams..

anyone got any pics of the actual installation ???

were do you find fitting the balasts easiest ect .

Posted

Once they're installed you can't see anything.

The offside ballast is fitted underneath the headlight and held in place with outdoor sticky pads.

The nearside ballast is fitted in the battery compartment and once again held in place with the sticky pads.

The ballasts do not need to be mounted a particular way up, just in a dry place.

You will need to drill a 20mm hole in each access panel (the plastic cover on the back of the headlight) to run the cables from the ballast units. I then sealed any gaps with black silicon to keep the moisture out. If the ballasts now come smaller you may be able to fit them inside the headlight assembly therefore no holes needed. In my case the ballasts were just slightly too big. If you can get them inside the headlight, wrap them in something to stop them rattling around. Make sure you don't restrict the headlamp levelling mechanism.

You will then need to go down your local garage to get the headlights realligned for maximum spread and height.

Hope this helps.

PS. Don't go poking around with these light switched on, there's a few thousand volts present. Voltage is needed to fire the HID's.

Dulux, cheque arrived today, will post kit once cleared :P

Chromedome is right about the voltage... They fire up at about 25000v, and then run at about 13000v!

Ouch..

What can I say but WOW

What a difference

And not sure if the PILOT kit has smaller ballasts but I was able to install the whole lot within the light casing so no drilling or grommit needed

Once again thanks and if anyone else is considering getting a set .........What are you waiting for !!!!!
