I've heard a lot on the forums regarding VAG COM, I know this to be the device for plugging in and faulting/reprogramming certain things, but just how easy is it to do it ? If you have a basic computer knowledge is it sufficient ? What about these codes that keep been mentioned, where do they come from and once plugged in is it user friendly software ? Where is the best and cheapest place to get one from. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hello!!

VAG-COM is just the software, the lead is the expensive bit, but if you go for a genuine or OEM "dongle" equipped lead, you save the $99 registration for VAG-COM, I got mine from HERE as did a few others on here..

Having read many posts here about Vag-com, I get the impression that people seem to think that they NEED to check the car, NEED to diagnose the system, NEED to check for fault codes, and NEED to adjust things.

Im not saying Vag-com is a waste of time, far from it it is a great tool, but it is just that - a tool. It is not a must have.

It seems common belief that it is essential to check the car every Sunday after washing and vacuuming it - else it somehow will not work.

In fact the Galaxy will run perfectly well with out it.

Good point there are a couple of posts where people seem to be panicking about fault codes they have logged! but were quite happily driving around oblivious to before they got hold of a copy of VAG com, god knows what they would like if they got hold of an MRI machine or ultra sound

I agree that VAG-COM interface is

 not a necessity

:) a great tool, but expensive

:P and that there's a lot of people 'quite happily driving around oblivious '

I purchased the interface and software as

 I've a couple of problems that dealer refuses to acknowledge let alone attempt to fix

:( My Galaxy's nearing the end of 3 year warranty - while it's under warranty there's only a certain amount of investigation possible without invalidating the warranty and it's potentially good to have a tool that can give you more info. on the source of a problem before you tackle your dealer.

Do you 'wash and vacuum EVERY Sunday _dg?

That's due diligence, if so

Jeff.

BTW Whatever made you think of 'ultra sound' vr6? :D

I just heard about a little program that runs under Windows XP: run 'eventvwr' from the Run command. It'll scare you half to death. There's your PC, been working away quite happily, no problems at all - but you look at this log file and you're amazed you're not sitting in front of a useless pile of metal and plastic. Sometimes, you can know too much. On the other hand, of course, if you see too many "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D" you may want to start thinking about backing up your precious files. I guess the analogy works...

The trucks at my work have the diagnostic set on-board. If the computer sets a flag on the display and you go to the workshops the fitters just reset it and tell you to come back on if it logs it again!

However, VAG-COM is a useful tool for the DIYer, but if your scared to do the work yourself then why worry?
