If my Ford dealer put down '3x oil', does that mean that they may have actually used the correct oil and used 3 containers of the proper stuff ?

I have just looked on my receipt and it has a part code next to the oil, does anyone know if this is the part for the 505.01 oil spec: F1343522

You better check that list - Motul Oils 4100 Power SAE 15w-50 is not 505.01 its 500.01 which is a petrol engine oil spec not suitable for PD

Just two things learned recently:

One branch of Hendy Ford said to me that "they do not put in the correct 5W40 oil in [for 1.9TDI Galaxy's] as a matter of course ... because it's too expensive for most of their punters".

If they read the Ford manual that comes with the car, they'd see that they'd be invalidating your warranty for you.

I guess if anything goes wrong with a Galaxy TDI engine that's oil-related and has been serviced regularly by Hendy, then I guess you've got some options open to you. ;-)

And: Castrol also do some VW 505.01 oil, which is available at your friendly Halfords in useful 'top-up size'. (Had already been available on the continent for a while now, I believe).

My Ford Garage (Grimsby) in both parts and workshop, insist they only fit/supply Formula E 5w30 oil in Diesel galaxys, and everything else i believe.

Is this correct or not? they insist its Ford recomendation.

Not for PD diesels - all diesels in the Mk1 and MkII are VW units. PD Oils are special and VW oils are usually xxw40.

AFAIK Formula E is a cheap basic oil which will inevitably chew the camshafts on a PD engine over a couple of years. If it doesnt have spec VW 505.01 (NB not 505.00) or better then it is not suitable!

Always worth checking when you book the car in for a Ford service that they use the correct oil, get them to itemise it on the invoice. (Ford oil with FINIS 1343522, 505.01 spec).

Out of concern for my engine i rang another main ford Dealer today.

He has been in Ford main dealer workshop foreman for his whole working life (he tells me!), anyway then says they also ONLY put Formula E in eveything (except the odd old cosworth), and Ford recomend this, so both dealers are consistant.

I pointed out a sharan would get different (synthetic) oil at a VW dealership, and would be recommended, he agreed, it would.

He said this is more to do with other vw engines (polo and golf and some audi) that have real problems without it, and it is more of a blanket recommendation to keep it simple.

He then said he honestly knew of no Galaxy PD engines ever having a problem attributable to the wrong oil, (warranty or not) and pointed out they would often get alot worse than Formula E in backstreet garages.

So there you have it...

He did say when the Escort cvh came out castrol GTX (liquid engineeering) was launched, and caused the biggest load of problems ever because people believed it was better than the Ford recommended oil.

Biggest load of bull....but what do you expect from a Ford dealer?

Galaxy mkII diesels will eventually strip their PD camshafts without the correct spec oil.

SK is right when he refers that Ford Formula E 5W30 musn't be used in PD engines except for emergency top ups, however he is probably unaware of the latest 5W30 Formula F oil.

This new oil - Ford Formula F /Castrol Magnatec Professional A1 - is now recommended for the Galaxy. Formula S/SD is still recommended as well though.

The latest oil, according to the spec sheet is fully backwards compatible with the earlier oils and will help improve fuel economy whilst being more stable with increased % biodiesel now in the fuel. It also handles soot better.

Tech service bulletin 10-2009 (copy attached) gives more details.

George.
