Oil and which to use is a big subject.

Yer dead right about the viscosity, but "better" oils do behave differently (which was my point).

Oil is not their just to prevent wear, but to do a multitude of jobs (cleaning/cooling)etc

I found that link...

Fluids also do not behave the same because they have a similar weight. fluids have a lot of different characteristics.

I'm no expert, but i do know that the guys who design the engines have a good idea as to what oils to use.

Why argue?

I'm in the 'manufacturer knows best' camp. I suspect that when VW ran their durability tests prior to launching the PD engines, they found some issues that weren't there in pre PD days, and that the higher spec oil allowed them to pass the durability tests (and quite successfully too, as real world use has shown).

The ONLY time an oil can be too good for an engine is during break-in (or more correctly 'wear in') when an oil that does its job too well can prevent bearings, bores and rings from bedding in properly. With the demise of the 1500mile oil change from service schedules, the factory fill oil will be expected to go to 10,000miles, and therefore is of a higher specification. This is one of the main reasons why cars now take 7-8000 miles before decent economy occurs.

BTW, I do all my own routine servicing and use Ford SD, and 2 weeks ago I paid

Yep, it goes on and on and on.................. :( Some excellent suggestions and advice contained throughout the previous 11 pages though, far more correct information than you would ever get from a dealer !

assuming for 5l - no it looks more expensive than the dealers formula sd, I assume you want an oil for your pd engine

Hi All,

OK, I've not read all this thread (only some), but thought I'd share what I think is a good deal.....

Was going to change the oil myself this weekend; out of interest I rang Kwik-Fit (round the corner from me). They did me an oil/filter change, using Mobil1 5/30 oil and a Unipart filter for

Just knocked up 30k miles since last oil change.............only had to top it up about 3 times.

Thats my boy!..... :35:

Its a diesel, at long as its got something resembling oil slosshing about in the sump it will be fine.

Its done over 150k all the oilways are probably gunged up needs some black water thin enough to get through there.

I bet you the engine would seize if I gave it some new thick oil.

In that case give it a fully synthetic 0W-30 oil and you can clear out those oil ways. Just make sure the filter gets changed soon after as an extra.

(I'm just hoping that the previous comment about 30,000 miles and no oil change is not meant as a Joke. Some readers might take it as serious advice.)

I thought that the received wisdom about diesel oil change frequency was 6K miles max between changes; my handbook states 10K for my Mk1 Galaxy, and in fact it was 10K since the last change (kind of crept up on me!). However, at

Quantum spec 505.01 VW approved for PD Diesel engines, you can usually get it from VW Dealers. Cost about 28 quid including a new filter. Changed about every 7k miles.
