jkspoff Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 What type of oil do you use, either in your own DIY servicing, or the garage you have your car serviced at, i.e. the oil the garage claims they use. Only the VW TDI diesel engines please. Please take the Ford Galaxy oil option as including the Alhambra and the Sharan too. Quote
GSMGuy Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 If you have a PD, ie 115/130, the correct oil is VITAL! Spec 505.02 IIRC.... Millers XFE PD for me! Mike Quote
seatkid Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 For many years now, I've used VW Quantum synta oil. :)Its cheaper than Halfords/Castrol etc. and being sold by VAG IMO guaranteed to be better. The semi synthetic (silver can ) oil is excellent value for money, and my 1.4CL Golf has done 150k miles and it still doesnt use a drop despite occasionally going nearly 20k between changes! I even have been known to change the filter every two oil changes - (the filter in question was marked as for 30,000km duty) In recent years I tend to use the (gold can) fully synthetic, it defintitely gives a few percent more mpg and I feel more relaxed letting my Tdi Alhambra go 12-13k / 18 months between changes. I only use genuine (OEM) filters - either VW, Knecht or Mann . In the dark distant past I used Castrol GTX (crap), Duckhams green stuff (even crapper), Shell Rotella (great stuff) on my air cooled Beetle, and of course it was the Ford oil that did my Passat in  Kept it going a while longer by using some extra thick synthetic Fiat stuff that is used in them big American miltary tanks..... For you PD lovers, there is Quantum PD....... My local dealer claims to use fully synthetic bulk supplied by Esso, but is none too specific...... Quote
VeeDub Nutter Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 The VW specialist (as they call themselves) that supplied my car told me to only use Castrol GTX Magnatec. Is this any good?I've topped up with the stuff, but thats only cos they gave me a bottle of it. Quote
GSMGuy Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 I think Magnatec is fine for the older TDi, but it does not meet the spec for the PD, 505.02 Mike Quote
Guest jtwonk Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 I thought the spec for PD engine was 505.01 & if you have extended service intervals it's 506.01, Some are using Quantum oil how much is the stealer selling that for?? I just got a price from Fraud dealer for their badged oil( shell so the parts gadgee says) 5 ltrs Quote
Guest WOZZA Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 IS IT NOT TRUE BUT, AS FAR AS I WAS AWARE IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO MIX SYNTHETIC OIL WITH MINERAL, BECAUSE THE TWO WILL REACT AND CAUSE DAMAGE? Quote
seatkid Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 IS IT NOT TRUE BUT, AS FAR AS I WAS AWARE IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO MIX SYNTHETIC OIL WITH MINERAL, BECAUSE THE TWO WILL REACT AND CAUSE DAMAGE? YES, IT IS NOT TRUE. It is an Urban myth invented by dealers....... The only problem you should be aware of is if you are a PD Owner: Don't top more than 0.5 litre of non PD oil to a PD engine (in emergencies only!) as the PD bit of the oil is then too dilute to do its job and engine damage may result. Masked Marauder Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 No, not really, I use Vauxhall semi-synthetic. Quote
Dave-G Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Millers XFE PD 505.01 :D From Millers :D Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 Millers XFE PD 505.01 from my local car accessory shop which, much to my surprise stocks it, and the local motor factors don't. Quote
Guest catteeclan Posted March 9, 2005 Report Posted March 9, 2005 I've got a VW sharan tdi 90bhp. I do my own servicing using semisynth.I oil change every 5000 miles and change the filter everyother time.Soon have 90,000 on the clock. Quote
Marky Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 Formula SD from Fraud 505.01 spec 21.91 + vat but barter with themand you'll get at least 20% off.I get employee discount of 65%....!!! Sorry  Mark Quote
Guest T120 Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I use Quantum Semi changed @ every 5k <_< Quote
Guest homer75 Posted March 14, 2005 Report Posted March 14, 2005 I use Car Club purchased form Asda at Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 25, 2005 Report Posted March 25, 2005 I use Castrol SLX, a 506.01 oil. ...on a 2001 TDI 115? Have you spoken to Castrol? They told me NOT to use this; only to be used with revised-spec engines after VW introducted variable-interval servicing. Not sure what damage could be done (if any) by using it though...... Quote
Ivor Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 I have a 1.9 (85Kw) PD, so I think the oil is 505.01 A service sheet from the stealers says they put in Shell Helix 10W/40 for Quote
Taliska Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Oil... aaarrrggghh. Service coming up, will try that Millers stuff for the 115 this time. Had the wrong stuff put in at the first service, and too much (I believe) of the Ford Formula SD stuff on the second... Must get it soon - anyone know where I can get it around the Southampton / Salisbury area? Taliska Quote
tim-spam Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 115 bhp PD engines MUST use oil that meets VW 505.01 (or 506.01 for variable servicing intervals). My local Seat dealer is fully aware of this, which to my relief means that my Alhambra will have had the correct oil used in it from new. However, their PD oil is Quote
rwtomkins Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 Heavens, tim-spam, why pay so much? As Marky points out above, the official Ford 505.01 product - SD 5W40 - as specified in the Galaxy handbook is only a little over twenty quid for FIVE litres. People say the Millers 505.01 product is also around the same price if you can find it, or get it delivered. Quote
