:( Today i have driven my 2.3 1999 zetec auto and it would not change up smoothly or go into top at all. Could somebody tell me if this is just a case of topping up the trans fluid as this can only be done by a ford dealer?

Hi,

 

Although you need to use the diagnostic to actually see the temp, you can do it without..

 

Start the engine from cold and allow to run for 10 mins, slowly move the selector frm P through all the positions, pausing for a couple of seconds on each, and then back to P.

 

The fluid level has to be above 35 degrees to allow for expansion, so I would wit until the engine reaches full working temp..

 

Get underneath the car, which must be level, remove the undertray and locate the test plug - it is a 8 mm allen keyu, when you undo it, fluid should spill out, not a lot, just enough to indicate it is up to the required level.

 

If none comes out, it needs topping up!!

You've got me worried now! My auto is at Fraud's as I write, to have 'Auto box in emergency (3rd gear only) mode' investigated. I was hoping it would turn out to be something simple....

Hope its a simple job as i now have changed it to a 1.9 diesel manual , but still do not see how they come to a price like that!

:lol: tell me about it, ive just paid one GRAND, as seen in my service post for little bits and bobs lol.

 

All i can say is my Auto box is very smooth at the moment, you cant feel it change gear, just the engine revs change lol - its great.

Well the stealer managed to fix the starter problem (inhibitor switch/selector indicator light assembly)

Stairforce - Of the 3 sensors, onlly one can be gotten at whilst the box is in situ ;)
