yghiatdi Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Can anyone clarify if I can put a 100w h7 bulb in my galaxy instead of the norm 55w. The new 'brighter/bluer' bulbs appear to come marked with a temperature rating of between 5000k to 8000k. What does this mean? as I have plastic lens covers can I get away with the larger wattage bulb. The reason I would like to change them is I live in a rural area and the farmers take great delight in leaving 2" of crud over the road and when this is sprayed on to your headlights its like driving with glow worms. Quote
chromedome Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 You can't fit 100w bulbs because they are not street legal. The higher wattage bulb would also draw extra current, almost twice as much, which may permanently damage the vehicle wiring. I've got Philips Vision Plus fitted and they are very good. They are also filtered so the plastic lens won't turn yellow. You can find out all about them here http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/ When changing the bulbs you will find it a lot easier to remove the headlight as it's almost impossible otherwise. There are two screws at the top of the light, with plastic caps on, and one screw down each side of the light (do not remove these just slacken off a couple of turns). You will need a long stardrive screwdriver. Hope this helps. Quote
GSMGuy Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Chromedome - Have to disagree, removing the lamps is MUCH more work! Changed my original bulbs for Osram Silver Star when I first ot the car - 5 mins tops... Then changed them again when I fitted the HID kit - an hour tops, still quicker than taking the lamps out, plus no problems with alignment after refitting! Mike Quote
chromedome Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 There must be more space under the diesel bonnet than my 2.3 petrol, honest there's no room to move. Is the HID the xenon lamp upgrade and how easy is it? I thought you needed self levelling suspension, etc. Quote
GSMGuy Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Yes, it's the genuine Xenon upgrade, no "dodgy" xenon type bulbs.. Integrated Ballast and starter, no cheap external starter or lamps on delay.... UK construction and use requires self levelling and washers for HID, but mine passed it's first MOT last month with no problems, and tbh, if there was a prob, it's a 5 min job to remove the actual lamps and replace with H7's leaving all the rest intact, until you get around the corner and another 5 mins...... I can supply the Techone H7kit with 8000k lamps (or 6000k if you prefer (too yellow)) for Quote
chromedome Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Sounds good. I'll have to clear it with "she who must be obeyed" first. I'll get back to you. Quote
GSMGuy Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Here's a pic of my Mums' Alfa after fitting 1/2 of the kit - see if you can tell which lamp is yet to be changed... http://img74.exs.cx/img74/4953/mycarhidvh78pg.jpg Mike Quote

chromedome Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Just ordered some HID's. I think all the electronics, etc will fit inside the headlight assembly on my Mk2 so hopefully will be straight forward to fit. I'll post my results soon. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted March 6, 2005 Report Posted March 6, 2005 Hi Chaps I was looking at HID kits and cmae across this site - http://www.h-i-d.co.uk/products1.shtml Thye claim that self levelling etc is only required on new build vehicles - upgrades do not require . Any comments? :( Quote
GSMGuy Posted March 7, 2005 Report Posted March 7, 2005 Bigjeeze, that is one EXPENSIVE site... Mike Quote

Mike Yet another fault with my Alhambra - my headlamp bulb failed on the way home. I read this post recently, so after a quick re-read of the post to confirm it was a simple job, I nipped to Halfords and got two "Super brilliance" Xenon bulbs (two for the price of one offer  ) for Quote
