Guest j_mchattie Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Has anyone got any good ideas with respect to removing the crankshaft pully? I have taken it off before, but it was a massive pain in the butt and broke my 'fabricated' breaker bar. Im thinking about getting an electic impact driver just for this one bolt - because i know how difficult its going to be. Im actually changing my Water Pump next week (its pissing water all over the place and i dont want to write-off my engine). Has anyone else done this before? and is it really required , taking off the lower timing belt cover? And another thing i REALLY need to know is the size of the timing belt idler pully(s) Torx bolt. Is it a T55 or a 60? I noticed it was a large Torx last time i replaced the belt - but i dont know how big. Thanks in advance Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 I bought the electric Impact Driver. Should do the trick. If not, then i also got a 24" breaker bar. And the T55 and T60. Quote
GSMGuy Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Had one of those elec jobbies - burnt it out taking the crank bolt off on my Escort Diesel Van!!! In the end, just rested the end of a snap on 24" breaker bar and impact socket against the floor, with my foot on it to stop it slipping, and got the missus to flick the starter for 1/2 a sec... Sorted and off dead easy! Handy tip, passed on by my Dad!! Mike Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 Thanks, I may have to resort to that if all else fails. This breaker bar looks pretty scary - should be able to do it no problem. If not, then ill try the impact gun - but its a last resort. I dont want to sheer the bugger off or ill be REALLY stuck. Thanks again James Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 Ok, i used the impact wrench. And it was amazing.I can REALLY recommend an impact wrench to anyone removing the Crankshaft pulley bolt. I didnt even need to lock the pully off - it didnt move at all because the impact from the driver was so short. Yet it worked. The one i have is just a cheapy - it was Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 Ps, Didnt need the T55 or 60. It was a T45. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 8, 2005 Report Posted March 8, 2005 7 hours, and i've done this before as well. But at least my car wont die early. Judging by what you have had to do to it over the past few months, you must really like it ! Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 When i did the water pump, i replaced various timing belt idlers too. Made such a difference. The noise is very much reduced, and it sounds stupid, but i think ive freed-up more power. The water pump was pretty difficult to turn before (as the bearing had gone), but i didnt think it would make this much difference. Perhaps ive got the timing belt tension just right this time or something, but there is certainly a large improvement. If your idlers have done as many miles as mine (152,500) then id recommend changing them - it will only take an hour or so, not much has to come off. Glad i did. Quote
