Dave-G Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005  Petrol engine @ 100K miles :o Are you insured against heart attacks? B) DONT DO IT  ...UNLESS ITS A STEAL :( Quote
johnb80 Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 It depends a lot on the miles you intend to do with it. You should expect 19 - 28 mpg, maybe more if you're careful, not a lot in the performance dept. If the price is right and you can live with the above go for it. If you want a good all rounder, go for a TDi, incredible fuel consumption, accepatble performance (it's good performance really but it keeps the V6 drivers off our case) and less depreciation. Double check everything works ESPECIALLY aircon if fitted (don't buy if it doesn't have aircon unless you like driving around in a greehouse). Regards - JohnP.S. About Quote
Andrew T Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 We changed from a Diesel Xantia to a 2.3 Petrol with 90,000 miles on it last year. I would have no worries about the integrity of a regularly serviced engine at that milage, it should be capable of at least double that. Ours has over a 100K on it and doesn't use a drop of oil. Cam shaft is chain driven and should last the life of engine. Diesel needs a cambelt every 40 to 60K. If you are looking for a petrol I would go for a 2.3 which has 145BHP compared with the 115 of the 2.0 but the fuel consumption is identical. Goverment combined MPG is 28 for both, you would get about 350 miles per tank at that rate. I guess compared to a super economical 406 HDI you would be close to doubling your fuel costs. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 The cost of maintence for a TDI is actually higher than that of a petrol! the figures are posted elsewhere on the forum, I have a copy of an official Ford document called The Cost Of Ownership Story, in it gives the break down of the costs involved in owning and running a Galaxy and it's rivals at the time! considering the labour charges will be the same for all models, it's the time taken to service a TDI that is slightly higher by couple of hours! even over the VR6  according to Ford, after four years at 80000 mile a TDI will have spent 12 hrs in the work shop on basic servicing where as a 2ltr will have spent 10.3 hrs and a VR6 10.5 hrs its not a lot but it's there in black and white so Del was right a TDI is more expensive to run  Quote
johnb80 Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Del was right a TDI is more expensive to run  You're not getting away with that!!!!! Now take the fuel and depreciation into account and it will rise up above ALL of the petrol models to be way, way cheaper to run even though it needs 21 minutes per year more in the workshop. So lets just consider the fuel side to start with, 80,000 miles assuming lets say 38mpg (mines NEVER been that low but I don't want to upset you petrol heads too much) would equate to 2105 gallons = Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 Ahhh! the old MPG figure come back  was waiting for that  Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 John, where do you fill your tank for Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Makes me laugh the same old arguments, the only thing petrol engined users have as a "one up" on the diesel guys when it comes to costs it the servicing issue. They always forget how much more the petrol engined cars lose in value to the diesels over the same mileage/age. It is thousands. Quote
johnb80 Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Ahhh! the old MPG figure come back  was waiting for that  Glad I didn't dissapoint you  Quote
Davetheref Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 My local Ford garage (Gates) charge the same set price on servicing on all models.I have just had my first service on my TDI and it was a set price of Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 3, 2005 Report Posted March 3, 2005 Cambelt change, for starters, whereas petrol models have a chain or two..... Quote
