Does anyone know what this problem is: I have an X reg 2000 model 1.9 tdi Galaxy

 

A few times I have had to brake sharpley - mainly cos some one has cut me up or pulled out in front etc. ;) When this happens the engine stops, the brake light (i) comes on and a beep sounds. :o

 

What is this telling me - I've stalled it (thought you couldn't stall a diesel galaxy?)

or is it some thing to do with ABS (this light does not light up)

 

What is going on ? :(

probably a dodgy brake pedal switch, get it checked on vag.com

I don't see the connection between brake light switch and the engine stopping, dodgy or otherwise.

Is it repeatable i.e. every time you brake sharp the engine stops ? I would be tempted to check around wiring connectors associated with the ECU i.e. crank position etc, possibly consider fuel (less likely) water in the filter replacing diesel that the engine needs (does it restart instantly?).

If your wheels lock up due to an ABS failure before you depress the clutch, the engine will stall as it will lock up with the wheels.

 

Seems a bit to obvious so maybe it is not the answer you are looking for.

I am not alone!

I've reported this before but nobody knows why. I think we should just forget about it, and not worry any longer.

Ah, my engine doesn't stop - I just get the beep and warning message.

There have been some reports of a beep and a stop message on the display, this is caused by the engine oild surging forwards away from the pump pickup, low oil pressure results hence the stop message.

 

Why the engine should stop IF the clutch is down quick enough I don't know.

...at speeds as low as 10 mph, as has happened to me???? Are you sure?

Try this simple experiment, get a washing up bowl full of water (or oil if you prefer) and run into a wall with the bowl in front of you. Now look how much water remains. 10mph, I would think it COULD happen, it all depends how quick you stop. I don't recall anyone mentioning a speed, only the fact that they braked sharply.

Yes - but the oil pick-up must surely remain below the top level of oil in the sump - and there should be some baffle plates in the sump to stop the oil from sloshing away from the pick-up point, if only for those (many) occasions when cornering "vigorously". If this "fault" really is due to oil surge, then it must count as bad design by VW.

It has been reported before that the message STOP comes up after hard braking. The STOP message appears if the engine is running and oil pressure is lost. It would seem to add up, I suppose IF oil level was low and the braking was severe it just might occur even if baffles were in place. Not sure of the layout in the Galaxy sump, I haven't taken mine apart (yet!).

OK Everyone - just read all the messages and stuff - sorry its taken a while!!

 

I'll check the oil at the weekend, but usually its o.k. I was mainly worried that it was the ABS or brakes warning me they're on their way out or something to do with having to spend

STOP THE PRESS!!!

 

Who was the clever one and said something about oil?

 

While driving home with about a couple of miles to go the oil warning light came on!! Topped it up when I got home, luckily had a litre of oil in the cubby that I bought when I had the car, cos it was a different makeup to the oil for petrol cars,

 

I will see whether this was the cause! or whether it is just coincident?

Its been a while and so far I have had no cutting out of the engine - so I will put it down to oil level!

 

Also I have just been advised that a local garage will service my Gal for

Actually, i had the warning light come on as well (STOP flashing plus the beep) which eventually was down to low brake presssure plus that the pads had worn completely. Due to the latter, the rust ring on the top of the brake disk had cut the cable for the brake pad indicator resulting in the panic message on the on-board computer.

 

Dealer investigated and with new brake oil, discs and pads it was all good again.javascript:emoticon(':huh:')

Low brake pressure? how so? I thought brake pressure developed when you put your size 12's on the pedal.

 

Is this some dealer b*llsh*t ?

That's a good question! Although my size 10 might be the problem; i'm just not jumping on them hard enough!

 

Anyway, the STOP message on the on-board computer came on when i braked very sharply for a not so quick left hander. I stopped and restarted the car after which message had disappeared. Got going again and when i tested the brakes again by jumping on them it appeared again however not when braking normally.

 

At first i thought there was air in the system but the helpful guys from KwikFit bled the system and there was no improvement. They also replaced the pads after which the issue seemed resolved. They came up with the low brake pressure...

 

However, the KwikFit guys didn't grind the top of the brake disc to take the rust ring off so the pads wouldn't fit properly so the pedal was very long before anything happened but then it came all at once, suprising the guys behind me a couple of times! Sorry guys!

 

Eventually the dealer had to fix it all but it was expensive with new pads & discs & new oil (which was due anyway @ 70k miles).
