The Dreaded Maf Sensor

HI THERE! I HAVE A 2000 1.9TDI ZETEC, 110BHP, AND HAVE BEEN SUFFERING A LACK OF POWER FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS NOW. I HAVE FOUND A WEB SITE, AND IT EXPLAINS HOW TO CLEAN AND RECONDITION THE DREADED MAF SENSOR. THE EXPERT DEMONSTRATES EXACTLY TO TO REMOVE AND CLEAN (WITH PHOT0'S) "THE MAF SENSOR IS A NON SERVICIBLE PART" MEANING THAT IT IS NOT EXAMINED 'EVER' DURING ANY SERVICE INTERVALS. THE OWNER MUST SERVICE THE SENSOR HIMSELF, BY REMOVING AND REGULAR CLEANING WILL ELIMINATE ANY BUILD UP OF DIRT CLOGGING UP THE WIRES.

IT GETS AS DIRTY AS THE AIR CLEANER, ("WE ALL KNOW HOW DIRTY THEY CAN GET"). CHECK IT OUT! I THINK IT IS VERY IMFORMATIVE, "ESPECIALLY FOR ANYONE EXPIRENCING 'LACK OF POWER'!. I HAVE BEEN CHECKING OUT THIS SITE FOR A WHILE NOW & I THINK IT IS EXELLENT FOR GETTING PEOPLES OPINIONS, AND COMPARING THEM TO MINE. I NOTICED THAT A LOT OF TDI OWNERS HAVE BEEN 'FORKING' OUT LOTS OF THEIR HARD EARNED CASH, ITS A GOOD FIX & PEOPLE SHOULD BE AWARE IT! :ph34r:

Except the MAF used in SHALAXYS is nothing like that in a Scorpio!

 

Shalaxies use the "modern" Bosch design using a hot film sensor integrated into a hybrid i.c. and incorporated in an intricate plastic moulding with narrow folded air duct.

 

That picture of a Scorpio is of a basic hot wire sensor in a cast alloy housing - no integrated electronics.

 

I work in electronics manufacturing, tried to clean my Tdi MAF, it didn't work.... :ph34r:

Just to recap - can the MAF sensor in a TDI be cleaned or does it always have to be replaced with a new one :lol:

:unsure: I'm interested in examining faulty MAF's,I wont go into why because there's always SOMEONE ready to shoot ya down, If anyone has one/some I'd be willing to send them a stamped addressed jiffy bag to let me have a poke around,just email me,or I can tell you my address so you can post it if you'd rather not give your AD,or even pay it by paypal :rolleyes:

I only need this part, which can be removed with anti-tamper torx bits... B) or by smashing the main duct with a hammer :D

You can try but IMO you'll be v. lucky if it makes a difference...

:unsure: I'd imagine dealers only exchange items that CAN be recond'd as there's little commercial sense in recovering components to simply be disposed of, otherwise they'd offer exchange deals on almost anything... :rolleyes:

In most exchange unit situations I know of, very little of the original is reused but the original may have significant scrap value (e.g. alternators, copper) or more likely is part of a manufacturers recycling/environmental commitment. In the case of a MAF, only the housing is likely to be reused as the sensor itself is a sealed unit, thick film hybrid technology (can't be repaired) and a manufacturer would always supply a new connector (which in this case is integrated).

 

More simply in the case of these Tdi MAFs, VAG know that the new price is way OTT and the exchange scheme is a way of not admitting that and not losing sales to the back door merchants.

 

Perhaps you think they can be recalibrated digitally (flash memory)??

:unsure: rest assurred SOMEBODY is reconditioning MAF sensors for a number of fuel injected cars...this problem is not unique to diesels/shalaxies :blink:
