Guest grello42 Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Well, lucky me, the car is now 5 months old and I have had a second non-repairable puncture - a big nail this time at an oblique angle, right through the middle of the tread. You may have seen my previous posts about a screw through the edge of the tyre causing me to struggle with a winch which won't. The dealer replaced the carrier under warranty and then broke the new one putting back my spare. They replaced that one as well. So, Saturday morning, having trundled the wheel to the repairer in the wife's car and heard the news that my latest puncture aint repairable and I have to get a new tyre ordered, I bravely start winding down the spare. Managed about 4 inches this time before it refused to go any further. Now, even crawling about under the car and using 2 damned great lumps of wood, there's no way on this earth that you're gonna get the thing off. So, the car sits uselessy on the drive on 3 wheels and a jack, until I get the new tyre. Now call me old-fashioned but this causes me a great deal of worry. I do a lot of continental driving and the thought of being stuck on a french Autoroute in the pouring rain with a puncture and no way of getting the spare off fills me with merde. Why am I so unlucky? Is this worth a recall? Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Never had any problems with my spare wheel winch, on my Galaxy, Transit, VW T4 or T5, the winch of the Galaxy has sat in a box in the back of the garage for the last couple of years! but it still works as I tried it a few weeks back while tidying up all the Galaxy spares I have collected! in the last 5/6 years I have had only 2 punctures, both in the same wheel at the same time :o a nail and a screw just to sure  I run without a spare so I must be very lucky or your very unlucky? nothing personal but I hope it stays that way  Quote
Guest grello42 Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 So, VR6 - you keep the winch in the garage and run without a spare? Why would you do that? Are you carrying that gunge that you squirt into a deflated tyre to seal any punctures? Actually, maybe that's the answer...hmmm... Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 Ahh no room for the spare the gas tanks in its place so we carry a can of gunge and a compressor, not that we have ever had the need to use it, touch wood  Quote
Marky Posted February 27, 2005 Report Posted February 27, 2005 So VR6....you still running low n loud....??? Quote
Andrew T Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 Managed about 4 inches this time before it refused to go any further. Guest grello42 Posted February 28, 2005 Report Posted February 28, 2005 Yeah, Andrew, it has - the first time it broke I just about managed to get the thing off, but I reckon it had wound down a couple of inches more that time. The other difference this time is that the car is already on he jack and I aint spending much time under there! I'll be ringing Ford Customer Services this morning. I wonder how helpful they will be? Quote
iainkirk Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 I had replacement spare wheel carrier No. 2 fitted today under warranty - the last one failed THE FIRST TIME it was used! Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 If it make you feel any better? I'll soon be on my THIRD windscreen in less than a week on my T5 ! first one got hit by a stone and split into four peices! the second one cracked a day after it was fitted! shut the door and it cracked right across from one side to the other! today it got another massive crack in it where it got hit by another stone, plus it leaks like crazy aLong the top edge :( number three should be fitted saturday morning if all goes well and the garage has ordered another one to hold in stock just to be safe ;) havent got round to checking the spare wheel whinch still works as I dont want to risk it :o Quote
Guest grello42 Posted March 1, 2005 Report Posted March 1, 2005 I guess that helps a bit... BTW - Ford Customer Service "have never heard of any probs with the spare wheel carrier". Yeah, right, well they will now, 'cos my dealer is going to submit a Global Concern Report, which could be the start of a recall! Quote

Wonder if that means that I could get mine replaced? then I could stick it on Ebay  Quote
