don't replace the head unit - it is fine, mine is a 4050RDS, and i thought it was cr@p, got distortion on cassette, and very rarely on radio. Then i had a CD Changer fitted, NO distortion at all when listening to CD's, very clear, and 'alright' BASS.

New speakers will defiantly help, if you buy ones that are better than the ones already installed, as you say, Sony is a good brand. for ultimate sound, you need better speakers, better cable, and if you can find it, a high spec radio (ie Sony)

Good luck,

Matt
