Ogben Schmutzel Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Scuse my ignorance here but I have read quite a bit about this device but have not got a handle on what exactly it is and how it works? Questions are; Is it automatic or manual, is it fed from the hot water supply, is it elctrical or what. Its just that I have seen posts about it not working cos the temp setting was wrong, white smoke, it effects fuel consumption etc. Is there any post that covers auxiliary heaters for dummys or can anyone fill me in!! Thanks for any help. Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Ogben If you do a search for Aux Heater you will find numerous threads many of which will explain its operation and effect including the undesirable smoke from the rear wheel arch and the jet engine noise during operation. It burn deisel as an additional heating agent for the interior etc. Good luck as its cold out there. Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 Neil, many thanks. I had looked at few threads but it not dawned on me that it actually BURNT diesel. That fact alone has made it all a lot clearer. Thanks again. Quote
Dave-G Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 Think of it as an oil fired boiler....that warms the engine coolant (rather than boils),and it only works when the outside temperature falls below 5c iirc :o It's benefits are noticed much earlier on the MK2's than MK1's :( Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Posted February 23, 2005 Does it warm the car interior as well or is it purely the engine coolant? And can it pre-warm? Like before you even start the engine? Cheers. Quote
Dave-G Posted February 23, 2005 Report Posted February 23, 2005 By warming the engine coolant, you get warm air from your heater quicker. If you spend a small fortune you COULD get the other parts that are available to enable a "prewarm" :( I'm sure that if you spend more time reading previouse threads on this you will get the full picture,in a better way than I can explain. :o Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted February 25, 2005 Author Report Posted February 25, 2005 Ok, point taken! Thanks though. Quote

David Look at the huge amount of posts on here on this subject. The chances are that there is a wiring issue - there are some wires that are exposed to the elements that can cause the Aux Heater to fail it is not always the Glowplug. There are other components that can fail but go for the quick and easy ones first before going to a new heater. It may be worth your while. Regards Quote
Jeff115 Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 David,As Bigjeeze says, do a search and you'll find load of posts relating to the booster/supplementary heater. now frauds are saying that it is not talking to the ECU.You don't have the year/version of you Galaxy in your Vehicle Type details??? You will see in the above posts that some people have difficulty in getting VAG-COM (emulation of VAG-1551 diagnostic equipment that dealers use) to connect to the booster heater controller, particularly MK1 Galaxy models (1995>2000). This may be the case with your dealers VAG diagnostic equipment also. This in itself does not mean that your 'heater is stuffed'. It may simply be a fault code (DTC) logged by the booster heater controller in the ECU which cannot be reset as diagnostic equipment cannot connect to the controller. You can check the start signals required for booster heater operation without the diagnostics - see here Booster heater start signals Hope this helps, and take heart as you won't need the booster heater during Spring and Summer  as does not normally work when ambient temperature > 10 degrees. Guest paulmc100 Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Hi guys - just registered here because I'm thinking of changing my Alhambra SE Tdi for a Galaxy and this issue of the Aux Heater is close to my heart! I know it sounds crass but my facelift 2000 Seat came with an Aux heater unit wired to the internal clock - its programmable upto 24 hrs in advance and its also got an additional switch on the overhead clock panel to turn the thing on for 30mins if I've fogotten to programme it! Believe me, in the five years I've had this car, I have never once had to de-ice the thing and always always get into a warm car on these cold winter mornings. After that, the thought of trading it in for a newer model that doesnt have it (pardon the pun) just leaves me COLD!! I just cant live without it!!!! Does anyone know if new Galaxys/Alhambras/Sharans come with this gizzmo - speaking to salesmen they havent got a clue what I'm talking about (whats new eh)? Anyway there you have it - its a cant live without it bit of kit in my opinion!! Quote
Masked Marauder Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 The kit is available as an add-on from Webasto. It should be available from Ford as an option on a new vehicle. Quote
