turnip Posted February 21, 2005 Report Posted February 21, 2005 Sorry about this very basic question ;) - but have never had a diesel before. Is is normal for black smoke to come out of the exhaust when starting the car from cold. When I drive off the car is running fine and the smoke doesn't continue. However it stinks on start up. Thanks Quote
Masked Marauder Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Symptom of failed glow-plugs. Do you have to crank the engine for a bit before it starts from cold? That is another sign... Quote
seatkid Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Yeah glow plugs, but remember.....on a diesel wait till the glow plug light goes out before starting the engine otherwise black smoke will occur! Quote
Guest MATT Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 i get a very small amount of smoke on start up - i thought this was normal? Quote
jkspoff Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 Its fairly normal on any cold start diesel thats covered a few miles......mine smokes at start up only, followed by the usual bad smell.......I wonder if any of these additives like STP etc would do it any good ? Anyone ever tried them, or should we stear clear of them incase they have a knock on effect to engine wear etc. :( Quote
seatkid Posted February 22, 2005 Report Posted February 22, 2005 I wonder if any of these additives like STP etc would do it any good ? Wouldn't one of those fresheners you throw in the toilet be more useful? :( Seriously additives - avoid Quote
turnip Posted February 22, 2005 Author Report Posted February 22, 2005 Thanks everyone. I think I am a bit impatient and forgetful in the mornings and just forget to wait for the light to go out before I start the car. I don't think it is a mileage thing as i have only done 17k. Thanks again for your help Mrs turnip!! :( Quote
