Smokey Start

Sorry about this very basic question ;) - but have never had a diesel before. Is is normal for black smoke to come out of the exhaust when starting the car from cold. When I drive off the car is running fine and the smoke doesn't continue. However it stinks on start up.

Symptom of failed glow-plugs. Do you have to crank the engine for a bit before it starts from cold? That is another sign...

Yeah glow plugs, but remember.....on a diesel wait till the glow plug light goes out before starting the engine otherwise black smoke will occur!

i get a very small amount of smoke on start up - i thought this was normal?

Its fairly normal on any cold start diesel thats covered a few miles......mine smokes at start up only, followed by the usual bad smell.......I wonder if any of these additives like STP etc would do it any good ? Anyone ever tried them, or should we stear clear of them incase they have a knock on effect to engine wear etc. :(

Thanks everyone. I think I am a bit impatient and forgetful in the mornings and just forget to wait for the light to go out before I start the car. I don't think it is a mileage thing as i have only done 17k.
