is it a case of "if it ain't bust, don't fix it"?

Definitely.

"Servicing" won't stop flexible pipes leaking (if they do - which I doubt until theyre several years old at least). If the leaks are slow (several weeks plus) then the oil shouldn't escape as the molecules are much larger than R134A molecules.

So why bother?

I personally would only regass when I suspect the gas is low, i.e. hear those "kettling" type noises constantly.

i was having a look at the Air Con John website mentioned in a parallel thread

http://www.ac4cars.co.uk/

and he seems to think the correct regime is a complete re-gas after four years from new, then the same at three-yearly intervals. top-ups don't work, he says. but mr tower's right, it's appalling that aircon service is not included in the car's regular servicing schedule

Do you lot have you fridge serviced regularly?

Actually on the Ford checksheet there is an item. "Every 3 years: Check temperture at the evaporator outlet tube. Check air conditioning lines for damage and leaks (LTS )"

The difference being a fridge isnt attached to a throbbing lump of metal that revs at 5500 RPM and doesnt get jolted by pot holes and runs constantly 24/7 365 days of the year at a constant low rpm, maybe if your aircon system did the same it wouldnt need serviceing or topping up once in a while?

"servicing" or "repairing" - there is a difference.

I'd never have known that if you had'nt pointed it out!

so your saying that the fact I get my aircon serviced every 12 months is pointless? the fact that it has'nt failed or stopped working and I know that there are no leaks and the refridgerant and oil levels are well inside the tolerance levels set by the manufacturer means nothing! oh well I think I'l leave it alone from now on and only get it seen to after its dumped all the gas and no longer works!

Don't know what it is about you Nimrod. You always seems to be very aggresive whenever I post my opinions. Will you calm down...

If you're willing to pay someone to check something is working, thats fine. I personally think it is pointless. Ford also thinks that a check for damage and leaks every 3 years is sufficient. Leaks are due to damage or broken components - they are not normal. It just a pity that they used crap evaporators a large proportion of which fail within 4 years - something unheard of in Toyota according to my brother who works there.
