Guest grumpy one Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Hi, just heard about this site, took one look and joined up so hello to everyone out there. Just a couple of questions, we currently own a '99 2.3 auto ghia x, nice car but a bit thirsty (a lot!!!!!). Last year we bought a caravan and have found that our current car is not up to the job of towing so we're going to change it for a new shape Tdi. My wife prefers the auto and I'm not bothered either way. So, heres the question, the tiptronic auto, is it up to pulling an average sized caravan? What fuel economy should I expect and are they reliable? Sorry that was three questions. What the hell, heres another, anyone out there getting really bad fuel economy from their 2.3 auto? That was a bit long winded, any info will very much appreciatedTa.....Jim :( Quote
GSMGuy Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Jum, the 115tdi auto makes a superb tow car - especially if you chip it too!!! Mike Quote
Guest MATT Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Ive got a 1.9 TDI Auto, towing a 5 birth Lunar Lexon EB. i found that it is better at towing using the Triptronic, as appose to the full blown auto. this particular model was picked as the best tow car in the Caravan magazine. i seem to remember getting 'alright' MPG figures. tip when towing, when starting off (pulling away) use triptronic, knock it down to 1st, get up plenty of rev, then knock it up to 2nd, then 3rd, and when i reach 4th, i then knock it into Auto, and it handles it fine, just when you slow down again, do it in reverse order. My galaxy has been extremely reliable, i absolutely love it. Quote
seatkid Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 a 5 birth Lunar Lexon EB. How unlucky not to be near a hospital each time...or are you into DIY? Quote
Another?Maybe! Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Hi Matt.... 5 births, how many boys & girls & were they all born in the caravan?! Sorry, couldn't resist that one! Our local paper consistently gets birth & berth mixed up in it's ads for caravans for sale... very amusing! PeteR Quote
Another?Maybe! Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Serious question now, do you get much wheel spin from the front wheels when starting off towing? I can get quite a bit solo in damp conditions if not careful, probably not helped by the diesel's low down torque. When I used to tow with Mondeo was liable to getting stuck on wet sites 'cos of FWD. Maverick I had later was no problem as was RWD. PeteR Quote
