Last jaunt down the motorway a few weeks ago the oil and coolant temp went higher than normal

110 degrees OIL and 115 degrees for the coolant temp.

Its been ok on driving round town etc.

Put this down to the oil change that was due and booked it in for and oil and filter change and the cam belt changing.

Had this done Tuesday and have just come back from another short journey down the motorway and the same again oil and coolant temp increased!!

As per previous posts it appears that I have got a problem with my MAF sensor.

Could the MAF sensor be linked in with the temp problems or do I need to have a moan at my garage about this seeing as they have just changed my oil and filter?

Please help....dont really want to go shouting the odds when I dont need too!!

Cant really see that you any reason to moan at the garage! as you said the problem occured before they touched the car!

with the several MAF sensor failures (5) on TDI's I have had I cant say that I noticed any increase in running temp!

check the coolant level and the operation of the cooling fans on the radiator IIRC the TDI has two make sure they both operate when the engine is hot!

My main reason for having a moan at the garage was to do with the oil change....have they ballsed up somewhere etc as that was my initial thought when it first happened.

Will have a proper look in the light tomorrow!

cheers

MAF fault would tend to lower temps on a Diesel as power is restricted....

110 degrees OIL and 115 degrees for the coolant temp.

Seems reasonably normal... I don't know about the coolant temp (I don't have a digital readout) but 110 C Oil on Motorway is not high. mine normally varies a lot depending on the power I'm pushing. Just over 100 piddling along to about 120 when pushing hard in a head wind uphill etc. In hot summer on Autobahn seen it as high as 131! Manual says 145 is when you start to worry.....

If your still concerned about your increase then I believe EGR is used to lower combustion temperatures at high power/cruising ..... maybe yours is stuck closed /bunged up/disconnected/reprogrammed

Is anything else strange happening, lights getting brighter etc?

Both the gauges use resistance to calculate the reading. If the alternator was running over-voltage it could cause them to read too high.

not that i've noticed but the voltage meter seems ok depending on what lights etc i've got on.

i'll have a look when it stops raining....a bit too wet!!

Instruments are run off a lower regulated voltage which is not affected by alternator/battery voltage..

took it to the garage last week, their baffled by it all.

Their going to plug it into a compuet next week and see if that picks anything up

Further things i've noticed are as follows

1. The oil temp increase first then warming the coolant up

2. It only happens when doing 60 mph + for more than about 5 miles

3. When i reduce my speed to 40mph the oil and coolant cools down to normal running speeds

4. Sitting in traffic does not effect the temp at all.

God only knows!!  :o

You're obviously driving too fast!

Three things come to mind, maybe its the wrong oil (maybe even flushing oil!)

or...

The cambelt maybe a tooth out (is performance poor?) get them to check.....

or...

did they disconnect the battery?..I think the (needle type) instruments recalibrate on reconnection...

just to add that my galaxy reaches a temp of 90 and i've never seen it rise above that, even after plenty of continuous motorway miles driving at no less than 70 mph. so your temp does seem on the high side to me. wonder how hot the engines temps reach for other gal drivers

Been to the garage today and they plugged in a Snap-On Diagnostics machine.

Came up 2 error codes

Both P17??? cant remeber the last few digits but the descriptions where

ECU Blocked

Boost Pressure Control Exceeded.

The cleared the codes and said to see how it goes as there code book did not have these codes in.

Unfortunatley the same thing happened again, the temps when up high again.

Anyone got a list if the codes by any chance as the codes are the same as whats on the VAG COM apparently.

If anyone has got the codes can you please mail me with them so I can take them in please :D :D pretty please!

Stll had no joy getting any more info on the dignostics check.

Had a thought over the weekend..any comments would be helpfull....

If the MAF sensor was on its way out as mentioned in previous posts (lost of turbo power etc)

Could this link to the above problems, i.e air not being circulated properly and "tricking" the turbo possible making it over work hense icreasing oil pressure etc etc??

Any comments please, dont really want to gp to SEAT and get charged a fortune to find the problem before they even fix it!

 ;) ;) :)

Check your EGR valve, this opens when motorway cruising recirculating the exhaust to reduce combustion temperature. They get gummed up or maybe the control to it is disconnected. Sounds to fit your symptoms exactly.

I suspect the diagnostic was actually "EGR blocked" and not "ECU blocked" as I can't see how you can block an electronic control unit!

IMO not a MAF issue even if its faulty.

Check the hoses connecting the turbo and the EGR valve to the vacuum solenoids, and the solenoids to the source of the vacuum, normally a pre-turbo inlet pipe.

When I had the head off my Alhambra they were all rotten.
