GSMGuy Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 MArk, whereabouts are you? A diagnostic check would probably help out... You say you have a cd with the parts on it, it it Microcat or TIS? As TIS usually has diagnostic procedures.. Mike Quote
shelbournes Posted February 5, 2005 Author Report Posted February 5, 2005 thanks for the reply ...I am based in NorfolkI have had two Diagnostic checks done at Fords Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted February 5, 2005 Report Posted February 5, 2005 Try changing the crankshaft position sensor (I think there is one; most ECU's need them to work). Quote
johnb80 Posted February 6, 2005 Report Posted February 6, 2005 I wouln't go with the crank position sensor because you say it runs at other times ok and is consistant? When you say it chugs and misfires is this while idling or driving ? If it's while idling I would suggest you look at the idle air valve and/or the throttle body and clean both of them. The idle air valve has other names such as idle speed control, dunno what Fords name is. It will sit on some pipe work between the inlet manifold and the air cleaner,i.e. either side of the throttle butterfly. It adds or removes air when idling under the control of the ECU. A combination of this and pulse width to the injectors sets the idle speed and idle mixture. If it's while driving I would be considering temp sensors (does it run at normal temps ?) or fuel pressure or Lambda sensor. In fact the lamda sensor could be the problem if it's withing a minute or so of start up. The sensor is not taken into consideration to start with, it's given time to warm up. The ECU goes into closed loop at a set point later when the Lamda is brought into circuit. If the sensor is sluggish it may be giving a running weak signal at this point and the ECU will crank up the fueling. Thinking out loud here, I'd go for the Lamda or o2 sensor on the exhaust (same thing, different name). Regards - John Quote
shelbournes Posted February 6, 2005 Author Report Posted February 6, 2005 John ...thanks so much for the reply..very kind the 02/lamda sensor was changed in december ... so it shouldn't be that This is a total mystery ...The car will start o.k. and sit for few minutes....If you drive it from start ...this will still be within a few minutes it will loose power and cough and splutter This will expell black grime/burnt fuel out of the exhaust ... and then will will be o.k. for a period of time... It would seam to me to be a COLD START problem ...as it will run o.k. for a few minutes ...then start this If you have any other thoughts please let me know Thank you for your time, JohnMark Quote
shelbournes Posted February 6, 2005 Author Report Posted February 6, 2005 I have just noticed that thesecondary air injection pump inlet pipe has no filter in the bottom of the black filterwould this make any differencethis was taken out /or left out when the lamda sensor was changed just a thought Quote
johnb80 Posted February 6, 2005 Report Posted February 6, 2005 Did you change the sensor for a genuine Ford item? We've had it on here before and people have had loads of trouble with non genuine items. You mention the air pump, I don't know the physical layout, I assume this is downstream of the o2 sensor as it's used to help the Cat heat up. Other thoughts are cracked exhaust manifold (happens a lot 2.3 Ultima's) which admits air so the lamda thinks it's weak mixture and again winds up the fuelling. Further thought fuel pressure regulator ? I'd still put money on the O2 sensor if it's not a Ford one. Regards - John Quote
