willg Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 My 1996 galaxy has failed it's MOT for 'excissive movement in O/S top suspension bush' said bush is fitted between body & front struts. This is an easy job if the suspension unit top mount nut wasn't as wet & rushy as the titanic! needless to say can't undo it. Have searched this site for rusty struts, have found it is a common problem - water seems to fill the cups up! but how do I get them off now? ANY IDEAS !!!!! Quote
Masked Marauder Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 Split the nut with an engineers chisel. Quote
GSMGuy Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 I reckon you'll struggle for access with a chisel - Get some Plusgas - not that crap WD40, and give it a GOOD soaking, preferably overnight by soaking a cloth in it, and leaking it draped over - Give it a good wire brushing 1st!! Then get a good quality SIX SIDED socket - NOT a 12 sided one, and a good long breaker bar.... This method has worked wonders for me over the years.... Mike Quote
Guest T120 Posted February 3, 2005 Report Posted February 3, 2005 Nice one GSM must remember that method. Quote
Richmond Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Having soaked the nut/bolt in freeing oil, first (try to) tighten it and then try to undo it. I don't know why that should help, but it usually does. Quote
willg Posted February 4, 2005 Author Report Posted February 4, 2005 thanks GSM, right about the access but i have to stop the damper rod in the middle from turning. which you hold with an allen key? (7mm) Quote
GSMGuy Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 Richmond - tigtening help because there is usually a little more "give" in the components, and any movement will break the corrosion, allowing the oil to penetrate further. Will, You can get six sided ring spanners, but I think you will probably need a cranked one? Mike Quote
marinabrid Posted February 4, 2005 Report Posted February 4, 2005 i just noticed one of my front shocker top mount bushes seems to be split around the rubber seal round the top......is this an mot fail ? Quote
