markos69 Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Hi Guys, Still trying to get myself a galaxy lot of dogs out there. Anyway my question this time is about automatics, is there much difference from the manual, performance etc. Never really considered one, but found a potential vehicle, 99 (v) TDI Ghia X, 48,000 miles. HJT Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Automatics are great if you do a lot of in town traffic. The down side is they do use a bit more fuel (about 5-6 mpg), and are slower on acceleration (about a second on 0-62). They are also more expensive to repair when things go wrong as they are horrendously complicated inside. I had a Granada Ghia auto back in the mid nineties and it was nice to drive without the hassle of changing gear. Howard Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Personally I'd prefer an auto, especially the later ones with "tiptronic" full manual option. However...don't know how reliable this VW 'box is; some autos are prone to requiring major work at under 100,000 miles whereas others seem to go on for ever. If you're looking at a 48,000 miler, how many miles per year are you likely to do, and how long were you planning to keep the car? Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Autobox is Jatco unit, Japanese. Mazda and others use them, as do Ford (real Ford not Galaxy). Very good unit. Quote
Guest p1948040 Posted July 18, 2003 Report Posted July 18, 2003 the automatic seems to suite the car nicely and makes for smooth and relaxed progress and manoeuvring. As stated the economy won't quite match the manual, but not sure it would be in the region of 5-6mpg less though. Our 2.3 auto returns between 26-30mpg around town and I think the manual is quoted at 28mpg or something, however happy to be corrected. Everything has a cost, if ultimate mpg is your bag then go manual, if relaxed cruising and or towing are your thing then I'd commend the auto. Good luck! Quote
